Ok, so here’s my question for you: How does Melville use the cetology of whales contribute to Moby Dick’s literary perfection?

You just reduced my argument to one point. It’s not only bad because it’s inaccurate

In order to write that segment, the author had to do scientific research/observation, regurgitate it, and add a sentence or two to duct tape it into the narrative. The author did that. If we can’t talk about the author, we’ll spin in circles forever.

Seems like we’re almost there, but not quite. I’m talking about authorial choices—specifically, Melville’s choice to disrupt the major narrative of his book, for an extended time, with a segment that had little/no value by any measure. Melville made a poor choice.

Why limit yourself? I do both. Sometimes simultaneously. 💪

If Melville wrote a short digression on the science of THE Whale’s species, in the voice of whatever character, fine. But instead he lectured long about whales (+porpoises, dolphins), listing a dozen or more species and their attributes.

Any revelation of his narrator’s relationship to scientific thinking could have been made without a lengthy research dump that fully interrupts the narrative.
