Why was the average score too high? bc of jokers like me, a PhD scientist taking an intro physics class. I know nothing about physics but I know how to study (and convert cm to km!).

Bonkers experience today: I'm taking a course & while the instructor was handing back exams, I was idly reading a paper about the harms of grading on a curve.

Instructor goes on to explain that she *would have* graded the exam on a curve (to increase all grades) but the average score was too high 😱

Informal study groups always form in my courses bc students build relationships with each other in class.

I wonder: could relatively simple course structure interventions facilitate relationship-building --> facilitating informal study group formation --> increasing retention in STEM? 🤔

I'm reading about persistence of students in a STEM major in "Talking About Leaving Revisited" (2019). The authors identify:

"An important, common strategy [of persisters in STEM majors] was working with informal peer study groups."

It makes me wonder...
