Why was the first Earth Day in 1970?

In 1969, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District recorded 65 days out of compliance with the ozone health standard, a record that still stands today. Santa Clara County was regularly blanketed in smog and breathing for many was a daily struggle.

We have worked with all of these orgs & found them some of the best of our country as are the many local and regional projects and people they fund. We resolve to continue to support history & humanities teaching and education in the face of deliberate attempts to make it impossible. #thepublicgood

Our hearts are breaking re: this Administration’s dismantling of NEH, IMLS, NHD, the CA State Library and the many people and projects it impacts. These institutions are about democracy, education, and building strong communities and knowledge. We stand with you.
