The birth of the climate doula In Florida, a new pilot program teaches doulas how to prepare pregnant people for hurricanes, flooding, and extreme heat β€” addressing a growing climate and maternal health crisis.

Doulas are being seen as an important piece to the maternal health puzzle, particularly for Black women, who have higher maternal mortality rates. In Florida, they are also being trained to better prepare patients for the climate crisis.

Enter the climate doula:

ICE fears put pregnant immigrants and their babies at risk Fear of deportation is deterring people without permanent legal status from critical care. Doctors are worried for their health β€” and the health of their pregnancies.

ICE has recently targeted patients in hospital maternity wards and on their way home from prenatal visits. As a result,
many patients are skipping virtually all of their pregnancy-related health care.
~250k babies are born every year to immigrations w/o permanent status.

In Arizona, a fight against a deadly fungus is under threat from Trump’s health policies What one Arizona doctor’s quest to stop valley fever says about America’s preparedness for climate-driven disease.

This is a great read by @zteirstein.bsky.social.

Living in Arizona, Valley Fever is scary! This piece breaks down the threat perfectly, how climate is turbocharging it, and the challenges to protect the public under an administration attacking public health.

Take a deep breath β€” marriage equality is probably here to stay Legal experts say the Supreme Court is unlikely to overturn its landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision anytime soon.

A bright spot- marriage equality is unlikely to fall, say the nation’s leading LGBTQ+ legal minds, and if SCOTUS overturns Obergefell, we will still be married.

Here’s why:

New Mexico will be the first state to make child care free The program, which is expected to save families $12,000 per child annually, is available to all residents regardless of income.

In the absence of a federal universal child care system, some states have worked to build their own systems, and New Mexico has been a leader in that effort over the past several years.
It will now be the first to make child care free for all.

After Katrina, one innovative nonprofit created a program to help single moms and low-income women find work in the recovery.

They now have a 70% success rate for placing women in the trades and other higher paying jobs. In May, their funding was cut under DOGE.
