A bit counter-culture but I do not push through! I try to be gentle and do things off the page that count as creative practice - walks, drawing, reading, mulling, anything! For me, pushing through has resulted in a terse relationship with my creativity and makes writing more fraught x

Don't "toughen up"

I had a conversation with an artist recently, a very sensitive soul, who said she was trying to "toughen up" to keep pursuing her art

While this is supposedly received wisdom, part of me balked

Our job is to be sensitive. To stay alive & aware. Soft.

Keep the channel open!

My challenge to writer pals:
If you're avoiding something because it brings up difficult feelings... or the procrastination itself brings up a mix of stuff... can you put on a timer for 2 mins & allow the feelings to do their thing?
Then see how you feel about the task then?
LMK how you get on 😍

I took a minute to just sit with the dread that rose up this eve when I opened an app I need to finish.
It was like a dense fog on my chest.
I imagined it dissolving & dissipating into my surroundings.
It wasn't long until the feeling passed & I was able to sit down to the app with clear eyes.

In the final leg of the year I'm struggling with a lot of resistance to my to-do list, writing, applications, all of it really.

Part of it is - I definitely just need a good old rest at this point.

But part of it is emotional. The baggage of rejections past that tries to get me to avoid...
