You're somewhat right on the last part. SE thought at the time that it would be their last game. However, none of the main line games are in the same universe, so 'beyond's journey' also doesn't make sense. They do have recurring themes, names and monsters. Hence my recontextualization of the name.

Have you ever considered that the word FINAL is meant for the genre and not the story? A fantasy where every sub-genre of fantasy (High Fantasy, Dystopian Fantasy, Steampunk Fantasy, etc) is merged together, a final fantasy?
