Bill Gates defends contentious climate shift
"I'm glad people are listening," he said, before adding that it was hard to convey "nuanced positions nowadays."
As I am one of the climate scientists he is referring to here - and I am a scientist who decided to dedicate her life to working on climate precisely because of how unjustly it disproportionately impacts the poor and vulnerable - let me clarify my rationale and thoughts below. ๐งต

One of the best things I do for myself is that on every quiz in my Global Environment course I ask students to share what they consider the most important thing they learned and tell me why. The connections they make and their reflections moved me to tears this morning. Grateful tears.

I love teaching when I can build on threads and they mostly can get the point without me making it by assessing the information on their own. This is how I teach my students about environmental justice.

Then assessed their and their community's social vulnerability and climate vulnerability. Once they had that I told them about the endangerment finding and the potential rescindment. Then we discussed if it should be when greenhouse gases seem to have risks.

I feel like I really rocked at teaching this week because after teaching climate control knobs and showing how greenhouse gases are increasing, my students used the national climate assessment to learn about it some of the ways we are experiencing climate change and risks...

Trump order could wipe out federal support for U.S. science museums
Institute of Museum and Library Services now run by Department of Labor as part of proposed dismantling
IMLS, the primary source of federal support for U.S. libraries and museums, is one of seven independent agencies that President Donald Trump wants to dismantle because he believes what they do is โunnecessary.โ scim.ag/4iryNlY

John Oliver and team did an outstanding segment about how crucial NOAA is and how catastrophic it would be to privatize these services.

Everyone is worse off with a reduced NOAA workforce. EVERYONE.
We literally make daily decisions due to expected weather conditions like grabbing an umbrella or securing furniture ahead of strong winds.
And anyone can access that information because it's already covered by taxpayer dollars.

Handwritten notes on a metal table at the National Science Foundation, 2/18/25. The messages include "You deserve better! Thank you!"; "Thank you colleagues! This RIF is WRONG. These orders are immoral & illegal"; and "Your service will forever be remembered and deeply valued - ENG directorate".
This morning, the US National Science Foundation fired 168 employees, approximately 10% of its workforce, for no cause other than they were the agency's most recent hires. ๐งช
