What happens when you fall down the volcanogenic atmospheric gravity wave rabbit hole? This is what happens. Volcanoes punching the atmosphere

(thank you @olamb245.bsky.social for the company in the rabbit hole)

I received a comment about feeling like we're getting more magnitude 6+ earthquakes lately. It's funny how recent news can influence our perceptions. Here's global M6+ earthquakes for the last 25 years, and zoomed to the last 3 years. It's human nature to look for patterns. What do you see?

This is from AGU last year -- number of volcanoes erupting on each day from the GVP. The point I was making is that it was stable the approximate last 10 years, but there was a big jump around 2000 thanks to improved detections of eruptions from MODIS and other satellite sensors.

This looks consistent with (official) reports of 10-20 m run-ups in Kamchatka/Okhotsk. With complex topo/bathy short wavelength features like the waves seen here can develop and superimpose on the long period tsunami. We've seen this in other places. Time will tell if this can be verified

Tsunami tide gauge data showing the first tsunami arrival and a larger amplitude arrival occurring about 16 hours later.

Tsunami tide gauge data showing the first tsunami arrival and a larger amplitude arrival occurring about 16 hours later.

This is tide gauge data from the Chatham Islands, ~700 km east of New Zealand. The tsunami arrived ~14-15 hours after the earthquake and we recorded a tsunami of around 20-30 cm. The tsunami also travelled to South America and reflected back towards New Zealand.

This should be a very useful webinar on USGS water data API changes, part of their wide-scale multi-year national water information system modernization efforts. USGS doesn't always do a great job of educating about how to access and use their data, so @cuahsi.bsky.social has you covered! βš’οΈπŸ§ͺ

A thread 🧡 on the importance of the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program, from the point of view of Washington State (unofficially, of course; this is just my opinion). Don't just take my word for it, though - read the NTHMP 2024 annual report here: www.weather.gov/media/nthmp/... 🌊

After a 25-hour workday, I'm finally home from this #tsunami response! I have many thoughts to share soon, but most of them come down to "hey, maybe we shouldn't defund the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program, which funds the vast majority of state-level tsunami work in the US!"

I have a close friend with elderly parents in a location that takes a while to evacuate from in Hawaii. Glad to have helped and keep them updated through their evacuation. Even if its one family I love being able to help and answer questions.

According to the "experts" at the Kiluaea overlook tonight microradians is a unit of pressure.

I probably shouldn't enjoy listening to tourists explain the volcano to other tourists so much.

Aloha folks! I am on the IAVCEI advisory board and welcome comments you’d like me to anonymously pass along to the executive committee about your #IAVCEI2025 experience (both positive and negative). Having concrete feedback is one of the best ways to ensure each experience is better than the last.

This was posted in one of the Big Island facebook groups and I just wanted to share. Sometimes its good to take a step back and remember just how awesome and special it is when we get to work on volcanoes.

Thank you USGS/HVO for all the work you do on island!
