I was in a 2 hour briefing today on the Iran War. All the briefings are closed, because Trump can't defend this war in public.

I obviously can't disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are.

1/ Here's what I can share:

I don't want the rewards card. I don't have an account. I don't want to sign up. I don't want the monthly newsletter. I don't want the in-store credit card. I don't want to hear about the benefits. I don't want the receipt mailed to me.

Just ring up my laundry detergent and let me leave.

If you’re roughly my age, it’s wild to reflect on the optimism for the future Americans felt when Obama was elected — young Americans spontaneously took to the streets to celebrate! — and contrast with what we face today. The falloff over the past 18 years is hard to process.

Melody track GUI with an Arturia MiniFreak synth and Arturia Fragments grainular processor

I used a MiniFreak and Fragments for the melody, a second MiniFreak for the bass, and Drumazon 2 for drums.

This little sequence turned out okay. Bummer that the screen capture didn't record the VST GUIs (see first comment). #music

Before today, no F-15 had been shot down in more than 35 years — since January 19, 1991, during the Persian Gulf War.

Before today, the U.S. had never had more than one aircraft shot down by friendly fire in a single day, let alone three.

Fetishized vs Strategic Dominance. In the former, they take out the leader because it's all about hyper-masculine American concepts of power and destruction. The latter waits and uses internal disruption to push advantage, and Trump isn't, and his court jesters can't be, patient and smart.

Conservatives spent years complaining about ”safe-spaces” and “liberal snowflakes” only to turn around and show they are absolutely terrified of ideas they don’t like (“racism is bad” “gender is fluid”) and willing to use state power to avoid the slightest discomfort.

The political effects of X's feed algorithm

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.

A shocking end for a well-respected studio.
