I didn't realize that they over winter. In the water they would be okay as the water is always above freezing but what happens when they come out of the water. And what kind of a metabolism do they have to produce enough heat to keep them alive.

When I was younger, growing up in central Alberta in the 1960s there seemed to be a lot more muskrat mounds in wetlands. Are there less now or is it just my mind going. I know that a lot of the wetlands from my early years have dried up.
