The loss of The Late Show is devastating.

The timeline between when his workers unionized and when he made his 180 from never AI to member of the board is pretty damning. Also, I’m one of the VFX workers who organized the union so I’ll admit that I’m biased, but we (the workers who organized and voted for a union) didn’t do it for nothing.

He’s already laid off most of the unionized VFX workers that worked on Avatar 2 & 3 and for 4 & 5 he’s creating a new VFX team based in Aotearoa (in addition to Wētā, which has been a vendor on all of the Avatar movies) where the “Hobbit law” limits the ability of film industry workers to unionize.

James Cameron is, by default, the annoying guy of every room he walks into. He’s doing this to devalue the labor of VFX workers (like the ones that unionized on his Avatar sequels, for example).

Not only was this a more authentic presentation of the 1989 film, it flat-out looked better than the AI remastered version that was released in 2023.

Great showing of The Abyss (1989) in 70mm at The Academy Museum tonight! Amazing to see the film with so many people who worked on it, including Gale Anne Hurd, John Bruno, and John Knoll who spoke before the picture.

They should finally do a Mr Blue edition for the next release. Give Eddie Bunker his due!
