I had floated a plan last year to initiate a vote of no confidence in the guy through university senate, but we could not get faculty support. Guy had no interest in resisting the awful bill that has mandated campus censorship if it meant he could get brownie points.

I say this and immediately stumble into an enthusiast from East Germany writing a book asking the studio about this very topic. Gonna have to dig to see just how widespread DXing for television signals was and if this was something Moscow particularly cared about.
My understanding is that atmospheric and weather conditions need to be perfect to create a tunneling effect that can propagate signals much longer than the transmitters were built for. Most of the time they would pass right through and travel into space otherwise.
Verd's doing a science! While AM radio broadcasts are normal and expected things to see bounce off the stratosphere and be caught by DXers across the world, VHF television signals usually have a 100 mile range. In 64 to 66 Dutch viewers caught Riga television about 1000 miles away somehow!
