if I see another academic describe LLMs - a tech owned by a small elite of white billionaires, built from extracting data from humans and minerals from the earth, and refined by the labor of underpaid workers in the global south - as an โ€˜important tool for decolonizationโ€™ I may simply just explode

That Samsung AI ad where the guy goes to a museum and his phone tells him about all the art is such a good idea. I hate when you go to museums and they never tell you what any of the stuff is

one of the things Iโ€™ve appreciated about Pluribus - that final exposition scene in the first episode really felt like Gilligan saying โ€œhey donโ€™t worry, this is the set up, this is not a fucking mystery box showโ€

For me it's the next gen "mystery box" show, so a copy of a copy, smoother edges, less going on, for a generation of people who review movies based on whether "it has a lot of twists and turns" or "it didn't have a lot of twists and turns"

still find myself scratching my head not just about how bad it was, but how much ppl seemed to enjoy it? the best idea in S1 was that the mythology was invented to stop innies going crazy, but they just threw that all out for โ€œitโ€™s real and generations oldโ€? and that the severance tech is old too?

I know all my mutuals are shitting on this and a lot of people on the post are frowning on this. But it's not enough. The fact that there's still a subset of people that worship this fucking monster genuinely disturbs me.

ICE is staging in a garage on Centre St & Howard in lower Manhattan ahead of what neighbors believe is a planned large-scale raid of Canal
Street this afternoon.
Estimated 20-25 agents inside, with more steadily joining, some taken by surprise and caught with their masks down.

I have almost certainly lost more sales to people's bad taste than to piracy over the years lol

Calling authors petit bourgeoisie is indeed insane. We are artisans and we deserve to profit from our labor.

That said, digital piracy has never been shown to represent actual lost sales, and may in fact DRIVE sales. I think authors should cool out about it.

its already nuts out there. I've got a 5 year old Nvidia 3090FE GPU that i bought (used!) 3 years ago. right now they're going for 30-40% more than I paid for it on ebay - just because it has 24gb of VRAM. prob going to sell it and buy a released this year, 30% faster AMD card and make a $300 profit

don't think most ppl get quite how badly the Open AI memory deals are going to raise consumer prices for basically all electronics - consoles, smart phones, GPUs, laptops etc

If you really want/need to buy something, you're probably best doing it ASAP

Update November 22. Weโ€™ve updated this article after realising we contributed to a perfect storm of misunderstanding around a recent change in the wording and placement of Gmailโ€™s smart features. The settings themselves arenโ€™t new, but the way Google recently rewrote and surfaced them led a lot of people (including us) to believe Gmail content might be used to train Googleโ€™s AI models, and that users were being opted in automatically. After taking a closer look at Googleโ€™s documentation and reviewing other reporting, that doesnโ€™t appear to be the case.

Gmail does scan email content to power its own โ€œsmart features,โ€ such as spam filtering, categorisation, and writing suggestions. But this is part of how Gmail normally works and isnโ€™t the same as training Googleโ€™s generative AI models. Google also maintains that these feature settings are opt-in rather than opt-out, although usersโ€™ experiences seem to vary depending on when and how the new wording appeared.

Itโ€™s easy to see where the confusion came from. Googleโ€™s updated language around โ€œsmart featuresโ€ is vague, and the term โ€œsmartโ€ often implies AIโ€”especially at a time when Gemini is being integrated into other parts of Googleโ€™s products. When the new wording started appearing for some users without much explanation, many assumed it signalled a broader shift.

Weโ€™ve revised this article to reflect what we can confirm from Googleโ€™s documentation, as itโ€™s always been our aim to give readers accurate, helpful guidance.

true, but as I understand developers are archiving chat logs to use as training data. so not teaching the LLM youโ€™re using now, but almost certainly being used to train the next iteration
