We’ve never been taught how to listen—to others or ourselves. We focus too much on being heard, not saying something worth being understood.

The issue comes as a result of no one expressing a level of curiosity in the work that is able to poke holes in the plot. I feel the lack of curiosity is a result of us culturally pulling away from oratory traditions.

Two words, Button Poetry. It’s not entirely their fault, but I do think they tapped into a flawed ecosystem and turned the faucet on full blast.

Performance sorta necessitates validation, & when you’re validated for performing vulnerability, it’s addictive. People make you feel good for hurting…

I don’t blame you at all bruh. 😔 the scene has devolved into trauma porn and aimless prose. It helps no one, not even themselves.

And what’s worst is, they have younger poets looking up to them asking how to do what they do, and their only advice is… “exploit your trauma more” 😕

Now character has been replaced with a cult of personality. Integrity replaced dishonesty. And honor is no longer even considered…

We’re losing recipes

There’s a poet in my city that went around sullying my name locally, regionally AND nationally… I’ve gotten over the urge to fight them but yet another person has come out talking shit to me based on his rumor mill and it’s reignited my desire to mush that (bleep) in the face lol

Had to convince my yang last night that I was a public figure because she didn’t understand why I give energy to those who publicly hate on me…

On top of that, there’s a poisonous trend of revealing without healing. Poets love making others and themselves cry but never offer any healing in the process.

The spoken word (slam) poetry scene is so hypocritical sometimes. A lot of talking and no walking…
