Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Robert Jenrick, a Wolves fan, seems unlikely to have been to more than a few games at Villa Park in the 1980s in the away end with his Dad.

Wolves played only one match at Villa Park (Sept 1989 when he was 7) when Jenrick was between the ages of 2 and 14!

First I heard about it was when welders came home saying β€˜there’s people painting white crosses on black people’s doors on our street’.

Fucking disgusting. That’s what it is. And that’s what politicians need to call it

PS you'd think a general election featuring some major voter shifts in the country which now sells us much of the energy we need (gas) might be newsworthy, but apparently a note written by a retired politician to a dead US billionaire two decades ago is more important to discuss πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Literally don’t even know what to say any more

Honestly couldn’t foresee how bad this could get - and my expectations were far from high

But this is a new level, even for Celtic

Panic bidding now for very, very questionable players with three hours left to save the season

Abysmal. Unacceptable

People are singing the praises of induction in the comments, as they should, but no one has yet called out how *easy they are to clean*, especially relative to gas. As the kitchen cleaner in the Volts household, this is quite meaningful for me.

With Induction Stoves, Chefs Discover a Foolproof Path to Perfection From Michelin kitchens to home wok burners, induction delivers consistency that gas can’t match.

Induction stoves are quieter, cooler, and produce less toxic pollution than gas. On the other hand, they also cook better, as a growing number of professional chefs recognize.

When a performer holds out their microphone for the audience to sing the chorus to one of their hits, I think everyone singing should get reimbursed for a portion of the concert ticket price.

Reform UK, which has a grand total of four MPs, was just given an uninterrupted platform for an hour and a half on the BBC and Sky News channels, in order to talk about its plans for mass deportations

When was the last time the Greens (with four MPs) or the Lib Dems (with 72) were given the same?

Just for perspective, a few weeks ago roughly 100,000 turned up for the London Trans+ Pride march. By contrast fewer than 3,000 ACROSS THE WHOLE COUNTRY, have turned up to anti-asylum "protests". Yet we are meant to take the latter as "the voice of the people" and the former as "the minority".

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.
