Draw Steel sets new standards for alt text in their books A deep dive into what an Art Description is, how it works, and who itโ€™s for, including an interview with alt text writer, Jen Kretchmer.

Draw Steel's art description guide isn't just a new approach to alt-text. It synthesizes museum-tested accessibility with an eye towards poetry and metaphor.

Lin spoke with @dreamwisp.bsky.social about MCDM's mission-in-progress and creating "more visceral and tactile" descriptions.

AI is cannibalizing itself. And creating more AI. Artificial intelligence consumption is outpacing the data humans are creating

Plus, AI has a limited lifespan. Itโ€™s like the dead internet theory. Itโ€™s already creating more content than humans, causing a dead-end loophole. Because of this, and because itโ€™s too complicated to hand-program, the AI today could be the best AI weโ€™ll ever see again.

To further build on this thread; creativity is in the details! For a writer, creativity is where to use an em dash instead of a comma, or the rhythm of the words. Itโ€™s a beautiful art that will never be learned by those who let AI do it for them

๐Ÿงต/2 Itโ€™s tricky to be able to step out of the fog of mechanics and take a look at things from a different perspective, but in the end, taking that time to think about the look and feel of a product, especially from your playerโ€™s perspective, takes it that much further.

These are the kind of bigger-picture design questions that all TTRPG creators should be asking themselves in the beginning ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Have you made it on the Rising Tide Discord server? Itโ€™s TTRPG specific and they have plenty oโ€™ places to put up a portfolio and get pinged for hiring opportunities:)

Itโ€™s so easy to be hard on yourself when your creative process involves staring at a blank page and processing, but itโ€™s exactly that: part of the *process*

Apparently this whole 1 like = 1 unhinged ttrpg opinion is trending still? I feel like itโ€™s my time to hop on but letโ€™s see if anyone is interested in what I have to say as a Genderfluid business student, writer, bookstore clerk and graphic designer. Iโ€™ll do my best if this gets more than 10 likes!

Whatโ€™s a technology that you think is overhyped?

Iโ€™m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you donโ€™t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points thereโ€™s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

Itโ€™s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, itโ€™s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. Thatโ€™s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

As all thing should be! Obviously stock art is a bit different than commissions, but itโ€™s certainly a shame that DTRPG limits that space so severely. I keep hearing about so many little things that further convince me they are very disconnected from the creators they try to serve.

Kyvilwrooti
These ancient forest creatures were once mirthful spirits that watched over the elves and the other early humanoids of the world. Benevolent, tree-like guardians of joy, the Kyvilwrooti were struck with immense grief by the many sorrows of the god wars and, with their creators gone, lost their divine purpose. The decades that followed saw these beautiful spirits forgotten by the world, and they withered away into strange, corpse-like creatures of bark and mould. They hid away in caves and dark forests at the edges of civilization, mere husks with no memories of their former glory.
Seeking only the mirth they once knew, they use their kilometres of slithering branch-like limbs to snare and entangle the corpses of children. Some will dress up the corpses and play with them, while others will string them along the ruins of forgotten towns in a macabre animation, seeking only to recreate the echoes of the mirth they once knew.

Ever encountered a strange child in the forest, playing with branches but never facing you? There might be something more lurking out of sightโ€ฆ

Wanted to share this cool and creepy little forest creature I wrote up for my fav, secret, dark fantasy project.

when these companies try to claim this is about whatโ€™s legal or not, theyโ€™re lying. none of the games that were removed from steam or itch broke the law. financial companies are making subjective decisions based on what might inconvenience them

For sure. Especially with the North American descent towards Big Corpsโ„ข๏ธ, thereโ€™s a documented trend of people preferring genuine interactions instead of the soulless advertising of big companies and, unfortunately, some creatives who only know how to โ€œsellโ€ instead of โ€œbeโ€
