I count myself in the “dumb teenager” category - my undergraduate degree gave me some important benefits, but not everything I could have, or should have achieved. It helped me get going on a journey, but I didn’t have the vision or maturity at the time to really get the most out of it.

There’s a lot of work needed to make higher education better, and especially more affordable. But we also do a lot of good work for a lot of students, and that should also be acknowledged.

My analysis applies across the board, from elite institutions, to flagship state schools, to smaller public schools like mine, to community colleges. At every level, some students outperform my claim. And every type of institution proves effective at helping many students get to the next step

Despite my snarky tone, this is under-valued work. It’s messy + expensive + inefficient. But still better than most of the other options available for students and parents.

I will offer a similarly snarky, but slightly gentler take: what we have long done in higher ed, and continue to do, is take dumb teenagers and make them slightly less dumb. We also give them some, but generally not all of the skills they need to land an entry-level job.
