For the 25th time, the LSE's German Society is bringing together top speakers from 🇬🇧+🇩🇪 for a week-long Symposium.

Great to open #LSEGermanSymposium 2026 with my UK counterpart Andrew Mitchell. Thanks to the students for their contributions, curiosity and critical thinking on UK-German relations!

In Wales I saw many opportunities for 🇩🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 academic and business cooperation at universities and at Newport‘s Semiconductor Cluster.

Around 80 🇩🇪 firms employ about 12k staff in Wales. These firms are looking for German speakers. Investing in MFL at universities is an investment in jobs and growth.

These centenarian Holocaust survivors and refugees witnessed humanity’s descent into a moral abyss. They inspire us and remind us that evil can be overcome. Their legacies will never be forgotten.

Truly honoured to have hosted them with the Association of Jewish Refugees.

In times of growing antisemitism we must jointly fight Holocaust distortion & denial and reach out to young people to uphold the legacy of Holocaust survivors & refugees. The work of Holocaust Educational Trust & @theajruk.bsky.social is invaluable. We’re proud to continue to work closely with them.

The 🇩🇪🇬🇧 economies are intertwined, with 🇩🇪 firms employing 450k people in the UK. German Industry UK is a great example of these close ties, representing some 100 members, employing around 100k people. Great meeting GIUK members last night to discuss our shared economic future.

German defence tech innovator STARK has opened a 3,700sq meter site in Swindon to produce unmanned systems for NATO and Ukraine. Great to join them for the launch - an outstanding example of 🇩🇪🇬🇧 defence cooperation in the spirit of the #KensingtonTreaty.

In two weeks’ time, HM King Charles III will welcome German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to the United Kingdom for a State Visit – the first German State Visit to the UK in 27 years.

On the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Bundeswehr, we face a new, sobering reality - war in Ukraine in the middle of Europe. We stand firm in defending our freedom & security.

Today, Germany remembers the November pogroms of 1938.

87 years ago, Jews were targeted in a wave of orchestrated violence in Germany. Jewish shops and synagogues were destroyed. Many Jews were murdered.

These acts of terror paved the way for the Holocaust.
