04.08.2025 16:40 β π 3 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0βFreedom of opinion is a farce unless factual information is guaranteed and the facts themselves are not in dispute,β wrote philosopher Hannah Arendt in her 1954 essay βTruth and Politics.β This line has been ringing in my head for some time and its relevancy grows daily.

01.08.2025 16:12 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0While Chaplin did pursue women much younger (eww, I know), he did not go after minors. Many stories were gummed up to sink him because the right wingers couldnβt pin him as a commie. Scott Eymanβs book on Chaplin breaks it all down. Here is a review I wrote: lareviewofbooks.org/article/a-ma...

02.08.2025 02:00 β π 189 π 47 π¬ 9 π 1For all the interest in The Great Dictator, I just published an intro I recorded for a screening of the film at the University of Kentucky in 2021. Laughing in the face of fascism is a power we all have. Give it a look! (sorry my eyes are closed in the preview) substack.com/home/post/p-...

PS - Mitzi's writing is always a joy to find in the archives.
Here is a selection of photos of my grandmother Mitzi Cummings for her Photoplay Magazine column with a dazzling array of Classic Hollywood stars. As a niece of Louis B. Mayer she had remarkable access to film sets & actors. I think she dearly wanted to be an actress and was certainly as beautiful.
16.05.2025 22:37 β π 17 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0....I mean, it's hard to argue with that right now. Some major shit needs to go down to reverse this. Just not sure what that is (all answers are terrifying).

01.08.2025 20:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hollywood history is similar, plenty of guys who sucked (great podcast title BTW). Though, that does make the good ones shine brighter. Still, too many assholes.
01.08.2025 20:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The assertion of βcommon senseβ here is laughable. They are doing in OK what the GOP is pushing in WI. Implementing Christian Nationalism.
01.08.2025 20:12 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0When I think about why to fund #PBS, I always think about the decades of amazing documentaries they've produced. Any new topic one wants to learn about, PBS has a solid documentary to serve as a starting point. Beyond that, having a five-year-old daughter, PBS has excellent children's programming.

01.08.2025 20:02 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Postman and Powers suggest we βreduce by at least one-third the amount of TV you watch,β which sounds similar to those today reminding us to cut back on digital content. βRemember: TV news does not reflect normal, everyday life,β a sentiment as true today in the digital landscape.
01.08.2025 16:12 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1The Paranoid Style is evoked by a combination of βheated exaggeration, suspiciousness, and conspiratorial fantasy.β Sound familiar today? Every time I hear about chemtrails, or politicians controlling the weather, or Jewish space lasers, I think back to the Paranoid Style.
01.08.2025 16:12 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Boorstin wrote that βan image is synthetic: it is planned, created especially to serve a purpose, to make a kind of impression.β
01.08.2025 16:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0For Le Bon (1895), a crowd is made up of three main components β
a sentiment of invincible power that leads to unrestrained actions
contagion (as in it spreads quickly)
a state of fascination, as a group hypnotized by a leader
