β€œFreedom of opinion is a farce unless factual information is guaranteed and the facts themselves are not in dispute,” wrote philosopher Hannah Arendt in her 1954 essay β€œTruth and Politics.” This line has been ringing in my head for some time and its relevancy grows daily.

That’s so awesome! I think that 1993 experience was my first and only drive-in film. I should change that!

Drive-in theater that was still around in the early 1990s where I grew up. Saw Jurassic Park there.

A Man Without a Country: On Scott Eyman’s β€œCharlie Chaplin vs. America” | Los Angeles Review of Books Chris Yogerst reviews Scott Eyman’s β€œCharlie Chaplin vs. America: When Art, Sex, and Politics Collided.”

While Chaplin did pursue women much younger (eww, I know), he did not go after minors. Many stories were gummed up to sink him because the right wingers couldn’t pin him as a commie. Scott Eyman’s book on Chaplin breaks it all down. Here is a review I wrote: lareviewofbooks.org/article/a-ma...

Why You Need to Watch The Great Dictator (1940) "The film never should have been made" -paraphrasing film critic Jimmie Fiddler

For all the interest in The Great Dictator, I just published an intro I recorded for a screening of the film at the University of Kentucky in 2021. Laughing in the face of fascism is a power we all have. Give it a look! (sorry my eyes are closed in the preview) substack.com/home/post/p-...

I've been soooo behind...I need to catch up on Alicia's chat with Brandon on Front Row Classics. A fantastic podcast!

PS - Mitzi's writing is always a joy to find in the archives.

Here is a selection of photos of my grandmother Mitzi Cummings for her Photoplay Magazine column with a dazzling array of Classic Hollywood stars. As a niece of Louis B. Mayer she had remarkable access to film sets & actors. I think she dearly wanted to be an actress and was certainly as beautiful.

....I mean, it's hard to argue with that right now. Some major shit needs to go down to reverse this. Just not sure what that is (all answers are terrifying).

Hollywood history is similar, plenty of guys who sucked (great podcast title BTW). Though, that does make the good ones shine brighter. Still, too many assholes.

Oklahoma to Roll Out 'America First' Test for New Teachers The state's Superintendent, Ryan Walters, says the test will ensure teachers arriving in Oklahoma align with its values.

The assertion of β€œcommon sense” here is laughable. They are doing in OK what the GOP is pushing in WI. Implementing Christian Nationalism.

When I think about why to fund #PBS, I always think about the decades of amazing documentaries they've produced. Any new topic one wants to learn about, PBS has a solid documentary to serve as a starting point. Beyond that, having a five-year-old daughter, PBS has excellent children's programming.

Postman and Powers suggest we β€œreduce by at least one-third the amount of TV you watch,” which sounds similar to those today reminding us to cut back on digital content. β€œRemember: TV news does not reflect normal, everyday life,” a sentiment as true today in the digital landscape.

The Paranoid Style is evoked by a combination of β€œheated exaggeration, suspiciousness, and conspiratorial fantasy.” Sound familiar today? Every time I hear about chemtrails, or politicians controlling the weather, or Jewish space lasers, I think back to the Paranoid Style.

For Le Bon (1895), a crowd is made up of three main components β€”

a sentiment of invincible power that leads to unrestrained actions

contagion (as in it spreads quickly)

a state of fascination, as a group hypnotized by a leader
