Podarcis bocagei on a rock. He has mottled stripes of alternating black and green down his back and gray and black symmetrically mottled markings on his back and tail. He’s male so he probably has around 18 torso vertebrae, whereas a female would be more likely to have 20.

We tend not to think about lizards as exemplars of sexual dimorphism, but there are multiple examples from different clades of females having more vertebrae than males.

It’s usually 1 or 2 more vertebrae in the torso. Probably so there’s more room for babies!🦎πŸ§ͺ

A smallish youngish lizard is looking towards the camera as it rests on a concrete patio. Its tail is almost twice as long as its body.

Third lizard species seen in the backyard this month -

The ubiquitous Western Fence lizards are everyday, 3-4 different ones during the day

The Granite spiny lizard

And today, Belding’s Orange-throat whiptail (probably). Seems like a happy little one!

Productive day of work, then came home and got 🦎Blithe's new enclosure set up. Still need some finishing touches and to let the plants grow in a bit, but it's already looking much better than her current one lol.

A closeup of a mostly light brown lizard with scales that rise to a point instead of being flat. It is looking at the camera. Less zoom so we see the whole lizard. It is clinging to a light gray stucco wall and is about 12 feet up the wall.

Well look who came by! Chonky Granite spiny lizard.
A closeup and a pic of all the chonkiness. I’m guessing maybe a male due to all the colors. He’s about 12 feet up the stucco on the back of the house.

Green anole in brown mode climbing up a sansevieria leaf. She has a stripe down her spine to indicate she is a girl, but also has a disproportionately large head, indicating she might be a he!

Oops! I didn’t take any good pictures today, so let’s have another look at yesterday’s Lizard!
He (or possibly she?) was licking water off the leaves, but sadly I did not get a picture of that.

A painted turtle hoists itself on top of a floating, wooden dock in a bog in the Pinelands. It has gorgeous red and yellow coloration on its shell. The water ripples in the bright, afternoon sun.

Oh, how I love turtles and am thrilled to see them after a long, cold, snowy winter. 🐒 ❀️ 🌞

One more of the Emerald Basilisk, well two males actually. I was distracted by the lower lizard (and the papaya) so I didn't see the other male up top, until he dispatched the lower lizard by running him off. #herps #lizards #basilisks #standoff #photography #papayainterference #costarica #lafortuna

Large male brown anole on a branch with foliage behind him, puffing out his red dewlap.

Lizard of the Day is looking for LOVE!
He hopes the Lady Lizards will notice his impressive dewlap!

Two small gray lizards are staring at each other. One is up on an umbrella base, the other is on the patio concrete. They both are in sunlight. A smallish gray lizard pauses as it moves across a concrete patio. It is looking to the left.

The wind is not a bother for low lying creatures like these two Western fence lizards. #herps

Okay, so the baby camera definitely has a place in my kit, even though the eye-af hunt is quite frequent. This might be my favorite gator photo ever! I named him Steve. πŸ˜‚

Circular paper with painting of a snake's head and neck, looking to the right. Top of the head is black-green, fading to buff, with a band of black down the spine just visible, and patches of russet. Big brown eye.
