Does being the corresponding author (CA) matter? After serving on many selection committees for grants, promotions, and hiring in EU sociology, I’d say no. Even author order matters little. What counts are solo publications and diverse co-authorships. So don’t bother being CA.

When submitting a co-authored paper to ESR (or any journal), choose the corresponding author carefully, considering affiliations and Read and Publish agreements with OUP.

On this International Education Day, let’s remember that building a better education system also means tackling the environmental challenges shaping students’ learning conditions.

Four months ago, the TSJM court overturned Madrid’s LEZ, a step backwards given the proven benefits of these policies not just for air quality but for learning outcomes. Cities like London and Paris are already tightening restrictions—why not follow their lead?

🚸 What can governments do? While countries like Spain have contingency plans for extreme temperatures, policies to shield students from poor air quality are lagging.

Students exposed to cleaner air earlier and for longer periods show even greater benefits. These effect sizes align with prior research, including studies on chess players where bad air quality hindered performance—a fitting analogy!

Implementing LEZs not only improves air quality but also significantly boosts the academic performance of students living in and around these zones.

This effect, though modest, is meaningful—especially for students striving to access competitive schools or degrees.

💡 My recent work with @mvaldes1989.bsky.social & @conteristo.bsky.social, published today (what better timing than International Education Day?), explores the relationship between low-emission zones (LEZs) and academic performance. Our findings?

Despite this, policies addressing poor air quality in schools remain limited, even as research shows its tangible impact on human capital formation.

🌬️ Air pollution is a growing concern globally, affecting not just health but also how we learn. In 2022, Madrid recorded a PM2.5 concentration of 9.3 µg/m³, which surpasses WHO’s air quality guidelines.
