Does being the corresponding author (CA) matter? After serving on many selection committees for grants, promotions, and hiring in EU sociology, I’d say no. Even author order matters little. What counts are solo publications and diverse co-authorships. So don’t bother being CA.
When submitting a co-authored paper to ESR (or any journal), choose the corresponding author carefully, considering affiliations and Read and Publish agreements with OUP.
Below are rules from the ESR Authors' Guidelines that prevent post-acceptance changes (set by OUP, not the editorial board).
