Why building more homes near transit will transform lives across California | Opinion California cities have largely banned apartments and condos, preventing people from living near jobs and transit systems their taxes fund.

Allowing more homes near high-quality transit is a key strategy to make housing more abundant & affordable, increase transit ridership & reduce traffic congestion & pollution.

I’m authoring legislation to get this done. SB 79 will help California meet our housing, transit & climate goals.

I’m so proud of my Democratic counterparts in the Texas Legislature for having the guts to take this step & stand up for democracy against these authoritarians.

The core problem isn’t that Trump can’t do math & doesn’t understand what it means to “cut prices” by more than 100% — rather, it’s that there are people who actually believe this can be true & an entire political movement & media ecosystem that encourage it.

They think they’re avoiding risk by bending the knee. But bending the knee only makes the risk worse. That’s how bullies work. They don’t go away.

When will major American institutions learn how authoritarians operate & how to fight this particular authoritarian?

Columbia agreed to limit non-US students, thus harming the university & US innovation.

Brown agreed to erase trans people from public spaces.

Penn agreed to strip a trans athlete of her medals.

Major health systems are limiting/ending care for trans youth.

Transit systems don’t work without great bus service. Fund the bus!

Not quite as vile as confirming Patel, RFK Jr. & Hegseth, but the standard is now so low it’s hard to even measure anymore.

5. Of course, Trump does’t care if he endangers Jews, since his goal isn’t & never has been to protect Jews. He’s just using us as a weapon to achieve his actual goals of control & destroying any institution he perceives as undermining his authoritarian goals.

4. Trump’s actions to withhold science funding purportedly to protect Jews in reality harms Jews & makes us less safe. It signals to society that Jews are responsible for this attack on higher education & science research. This does nothing except lead to demonization of & violence against Jews.

3. Antisemitism is a serious issue, but it has nothing to do with scientific research funding. UC is a global epicenter of science & has helped cure diseases & make the world a better place. The notion that destroying cancer, Alzheimer’s & diabetes research somehow helps Jews is vile & destructive.

2. UC is dealing with campus antisemitism & is taking the issue seriously. I co-chair our Legislative Jewish Caucus, and we’ve worked closely with UC on the issue. We don’t need Trump or his lackeys to use antisemitism as a pretext to achieve their actual goal: Destroying higher education & science.

And they’re now detaining him indefinitely at the airport without access to counsel.
