Revisiting the larval morphology of Oiceoptoma thoracicum (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Silphinae) Abstract. Precise identification of insect species and their developmental stages (instars) on human remains is crucial for estimating the postmortem inter

Larval morphology is a neglected topic in entomology as they're usually a bit boring. Which leads to less interest from publi and some professional entomologist as well, but check out this beautiful trilobite. It's amazing!

Dear #Rstats & #ecology, does anybody have textbook recommendations for applications of species distribution models?

Ideally covering how to deal with sketchy occurrence data, aimed for biology grad students with a more applied focus (i.e. not too overloaded with scary fundamental statistics).

I like this one, but for application I would use specific papers or tutorials. Don't overthink the data too much. I was surprised recently that the species I was interested in occurred on the island it was not supposed to be. So if my beetle data are not in the middle of the sea, I am keeping them.

Thanks for the link. It was an interesting read, although my view of the issue is more basic. I would be happy if more ecological studies did not discard the larval material due to its problematic identification and used methods that allow them to be sampled in the first place.

I see a similar bias in entomology, where we focus on adults, meanwhile we almost completely ignore the larvae. Especially in beetles the discrepancy in our knowledge about life stages is staggering.

Sorry, for making you to elaborate. However I find your post even more interesting. I had no idea about color vision of bumblebees.

That might be true just for the honeybee. ๐Ÿ˜ There is a planty of other bees, which might see red. And if not, butterflies will.

Do you agree with this approach or do you consider it extortion? After 15+ years of contemplating the issue I still cannot decide what is the lesser evil here.

Excellent paper. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ How did you keep track of the number of generations at different regimes and localities? I'll be "stealing" parts of your methodology for sure. ๐Ÿ˜

Dengue Virus Effects on Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes: Genetic Manipulation or Byproduct? A new research review examines how carrying dengue virus affects Aedes aegypti mosquitoes' life cycle and behavior and whether the virus manipulates its mosquito hostโ€”or if changes are byproducts of o...

A new review indicates that Dengue virus affects its mosquito hosts in ways that possibly increase disease spread. ๐ŸฆŸ๐Ÿฆ

E.g. it may make infected mosquitoes more active, more likely to bite, more likely to re-bite if interrupted, and feed longer.

Could you please add me? I work on the applied interpretation of thermal biology data within the forensic entomology framework. However, I would love to connect with others working in the more theoretical part of the field.
