๐ป Head of Development - I lead a team building software on Laravel. Away from work you'll find me on the golf course โณ๏ธ or travelling โ๏ธ.

17.02.2025 20:27 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Who else is heading to the #PHPUK conference next week? I'll be there for my first time - looking forward to getting to know some more PHP devs in-person! #php
11.02.2025 14:32 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0๐๏ธ I had a great time giving my first ever talk at a local tech meet-up last night - explaining why #PHP isn't dead and is a great choice for dev projects in 2025! I was pretty nervous in the run-up to the event, but it was alright on the night โบ๏ธ. I've already committed to my next talk too!
05.02.2025 21:30 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Having lightly tinkered with it before, I'm finally getting to stuck into building a @filamentphp.com project. Super impressed so far building CRUD tooling. Looking forward to seeing how easy it is to go beyond that. #laravel #php
29.01.2025 19:26 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I've just released ๐ฅง PIE 0.6.0! This release adds commands to manage repositories, allowing maintainers/users to test with local paths, add VCS repositories, and Private Packagist!

And PixelFed, a decentralised photo sharing network (touted by the media as a potential Instagram killer) thatโs built on Laravel.
28.01.2025 18:58 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I of course already have NativePHP and the work @simonhamp.me is doing for iOS.
28.01.2025 18:52 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I need some examples of awesome PHP projects for an upcoming talk. Things that are pushing the boundaries / a little unexpected from PHP. Things that solve interesting problems. Things that have impressive scale. #php
28.01.2025 18:52 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thanks for the offer, I really appreciate that. Iโll see how much progress I make on it over the next few days. All good practice for another one Iโve got in March ๐.
22.01.2025 06:48 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm (nervously ๐ฌ) giving my first talk at a tech meet-up exactly 2 weeks today. If you're local to #Bournemouth, come along to TechTonic and hear me try to answer the question "Is PHP Dead?". ๐๏ธ Tickets available here; www.tickettailor.com/events/silic... #php #phpcommunity
21.01.2025 20:22 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Ha, yes, even my commute at 45mins is enough for me! I'd recommend having a chat with Paul @ ByteHire - he's always got some interesting PHP roles available.
17.01.2025 13:50 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Hey Robin ๐. It is an office based role, weโre actually in the process of renovating a new office at the moment, however itโs WFH on Fridays.
17.01.2025 07:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This is going to be the perfect ending to the talk Iโm giving at a local meetup soon ๐
16.01.2025 20:24 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Even with a large tech based company shutting up shop and leaving #Bournemouth, and whatever your opinions on their outspoken announcement are, the local dev community is strong ๐ช

I'm on the lookout for a senior #PHP / #Laravel developer to join the team at Yammayap. It's an office based position in sunny #Bournemouth / #Poole. Full details available here: www.yammayap.com/jobs/ - or message me if you fancy a chat!
16.01.2025 08:23 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Another issue I commonly see in Laravel projects is trying to access the session from queued jobs - which of course is the same root problem.
I always encourage devs to try and only use the session / auth helpers from the HTTP layer (i.e. controllers / middleware / requests).
@markoliver.website I've just came across www.digitalskillshub.org.uk/tech-talks - possibly another candidate for your list of other local events on the @devdottalk.uk site?
14.01.2025 11:24 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1๐ We are! For our projects with a larger test suite, we do as much as we can to keep the running time low, so pay for GHA runners with more cores.

25.11.2024 20:39 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Oh wow, can't wait to try this! ๐ If this is as good as the write-up suggests, this could be a game changing component for us - I'm yet to see a rich editor that ticks all the boxes (performant, customisable, markdown + HTML support & security).
25.11.2024 20:07 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0In this case, soft deleting for instant user feedback, with the expensive / slow "permanent" deletion handled by a background job can work very well. It can also act as a safety net, with the permanent deletion occurring X time after the initial request - giving the opportunity to undo if needed.

25.11.2024 20:02 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Of course passing this off to the database to deal with via "ON DELETE CASCADE" rather than the ORM is a possibility, but this isn't always practical, especially if the data hierarchy is using polymorphic relationships in Eloquent.
25.11.2024 20:02 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The one thing that I do think the native soft delete functionality is good for is "temporary" deletions.
A simple delete request at a high level of a deeply nested data set might result in many expensive DELETE queries across a large number of tables.
