โThis year we saw the first decline in two decades of women in the House of Representatives, which I find really shocking, and itโs due to all those constraints in our polarized, rigid system. The only way that weโre really going to address that and tackle that is to change the electoral system.โ

On this day of 1976, the first female midshipman arrived to begin training at the U.S. Naval Academy. Congress ordered the academy to stop excluding women, after women filed suit in 1973. #WeTheMen

On this day in 1913, women in Illinois won the right to vote for President, the first such victory east of the Mississippi River. Illinois preserved other sex-based disenfranchisement until the 19th Amendmentโs ratification in 1920. #WeTheMen

A great day at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law graduation where we were inspired by @sifill.bsky.social profound call for our students to hew closely to their oath as attorneys and frame a new chapter in our constitutional republic.

Belva Lockwood
On this day in 1894, the Supreme Court heard In re Lockwood. Belva Lockwood, a pioneering attorney & 1884 presidential candidate, challenged VAโs refusal to admit her to the state bar. She lost, even though VAโs statute explicitly authorized admission to โany personโ admitted elsewhere. #WeTheMen

Educational Activism: Creating an AP U.S. Womenโs History Course
We represent a large group of teachers and students working together to lead a national campaign to create an advanced placement (AP) course on women: an AP U.S. womenโs history course known โฆ
Today we are sharing a proposal for an AP womenโs history course. We know that โa comprehensive understanding of womenโs history can act as an empowering agent that will allow the youth of America to enter positions of power knowing their worth and potential impact.โ nursingclio.org/2025/02/19/e...

A New, More Inclusive Approach to Socratic Teaching
Scholarship is a powerful tool for changing how people think, plan, and govern. By giving voice to bright minds and bold ideas, we seek to foster understanding and drive progressive change.
Buried in exam grading and looking to procrastinate further? Check out my Dickens-inspired blog post about "Inclusive Socratic Teaching." Don't be haunted by the ghosts of pedagogy past when designing your Spring courses. The blog pairs best with egg nog!

We the Men: How Forgetting Women's Struggles for Equality Perpetuates Inequality (Oxford University Press forthcoming 2025)
I am excited to join Bluesky and to share the cover for my new book, which will be out from Oxford in March. In a nation whose Constitution purports to speak for "We the People," too many of the stories that powerful Americans tell about law and society include only #WeTheMen.
