I believe the true the motivation behind banning books is to keep readers in the dark. To keep them isolated and alone. Banning books disempowers readers, especially children. That's what this has always been about. That's why we can't stop fighting it. #BannedBooksWeek #kidlit

When a child reads a book and sees how a character experienced something similar and survived, it provides a lifeline to that reader. They go from feeling completely alone in the world to receiving a shred of hope. #BannedBooksWeek #kidlit

Today I spent time w/ students at the Center for Cartoon Studies brainstorming picture book ideas and it felt SO GOOD to just delight in stories and their endless possibilities. I share this b/c I needed to be reminded of the power of PLAY and imagination and the deep need for joy in these times.

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

Silencing authors leads to silencing kids. Many of us have witnessed the way a book has empowered a child to speak up for themselves or others. To get help. This is how change happens. Predators want to shut this down. That’s the tragedy of censorship. And it’s happening everywhere.

If you ever find yourself losing faith in people, or wondering “do people even CARE anymore?!”, visit your local library. I say this without hyperbole, I am always struck by how much librarians care, every time I’m there.

Always helping. Always tending. Always reaching out. We owe them so much. 💙

On the bright side, I'm playing roller derby this weekend! Vixens vs Yankee Brutals, Saturday, 4pm, Woodstock Union Arena!!!

Learned yesterday about more of my books going out of print and feeling blue but grateful for the long run some had. Also a big FU to the groups who have intimidated teachers and librarians from having books like mine in their spaces. Keeping kids in the dark is what’s truly harmful, and you know it
