Jack Gramlich's excellent thesis finds that at a MINIMUM the notice period did not increase evictions and provided some compelling evidence that it lowered them in the short term which is what the Minneapolis ordiance seeks to do conservancy.umn.edu/items/547c6f...
In Minneapolis alone:
Last year there were 43 evictions filed from March 1-10.
This March: 123 filings.
2025 = MN's highest eviction filing #'s ever.
End of Jan '26, 9% below last year's trends. As of yesterday, 2.6% below.
During same period, 87% more inquiries to HOME Line for $ assistance compared to 2025.
This eclipses any moment during & post-pandemic moratorium. This is not a normal situation.

TODAY: The Minnesota Senate will vote on a bill to provide one-time emergency rental and utility assistance. Minnesota is currently seeing more evictions than ever before, and if we donβt act urgently Minnesotans will lose their homes.

Yes, 5pm today.
Itβs day 99 of the ICE occupation of MN.
Weβre still out patrolling and raising money and delivering groceries to keep our neighbors safe.
Call and ask Mayor Frey to do the same by NOT vetoing Pause Evictions, Save Lives.

elected officials in the minnesota state senate and house representing minneapolis have sent a letter to mayor jacob frey urging him not to veto the pause evictions, save lives bill which would extend the notice period from 30 days to 60 to address the financial impact of the ICE occupation
The Minneapolis City Council passed the measure last week. It requires landlords to give tenants 60 daysβ notice before filing for eviction, instead of 30 days. The extension would expire at the end of July.
Mayor Jacob Frey has not yet said if heβll support the policy.
Statewide eviction filings compared to same time in 2025 (which was highest year w/ ~25,500 filings):
-End of Jan: 9% below 2025 trends
-End of Feb: 6% below 2025 trends
-Last Friday: 3% below 2025 trends
We'd be well above last year's levels without mutual aid...it's workingβmore time is needed!
iβm outside of an affordable housing building by commonbond for a press conference by housing experts urging minneapolis mayor jacob frey not to veto βpause evictions, save lives,β which increases notice period from 30 to 60 days to help renters impacted by operation metro surge
Eviction researchers and tenant advocacy organizations say that while itβs hard to predict what could happen months from now, familiesβ needs are immediate. www.minnpost.com/metro/2026/0...
I have written confirmation from County staff that the $1 million in ERA the council recently passed is available pre-filing.
I think it's also worth noting that HOME Line has not been approached about nor seen this draft language that apparently is "amenable to the vast majority of interests."
Also, the $1 million in emergency rental assistance that the city recently passed WILL be available pre-filing.

Today is Bandcamp Friday.
A bill with $40 million in rent relief is headed to the Minnesota Senate floor next week. Lead author @lindseyportmn.bsky.social crafted a bill that addresses the urgency of the moment.
Plus, the bill includes my provision to extend pre eviction notices from 14 to 30 days temporarily.
The Minneapolis City Council has voted to extend the required eviction notice timeline for renters, as some residents struggle to pay due to the immigration enforcement operation.
Statewide residential eviction filings 1/1 thru 3/4: ~4,630. Compared to same period 2025: ~4,824.
We're 4% below last year, but 2025 was highest filing totals we've ever seen.
With millions raised in mutual aid + gov't rent relief, extremely concerning we're nearly at same filing rate as last year.
Minneapolis City Council passes eviction notice extension from 30 days to 60. Same margin as in committee 7-5-1. Mayoral veto surely coming, and the votes aren't there to override it.
Voting no: Rainville, Vetaw, Warren, Shaffer, Palmisano
Abstention: Whiting

Shameful.
Non-profits are still governed by market logic and are not a substitute for the welfare state and robust, well-funded public housing
Folks at CURA found that even extending the pre-eviction notice period in Brookyn Center resulted in a drop in evictions relative to other similar places. I don't know what these other folks are talking about
thank you D.A. bullock for not singing at the city council meeting @bullycreative.bsky.social
