It's been just over a year since leaving Dark Horse and I've grown a lot as a freelance editor. I'm really eager to get back to editing more comics and graphic novels this year, especially for authors in the indie space.

Thank you!! I feel like it's fun to record it! theres a dramatic realtime suspense about whether i make it or not that I wouldn't be able to reproduce if i was already successful and blogging about my past

it's nerve-wracking at first but if you're focusing really hard on thinking about what to improve on your work, your focus goes on 'working' and not on 'yourself' as much. what they think about me doesnt matter. we're focusing on improving a work together

yes that editor was super serious about giving feedback! I really appreciated it~ I think giving feedback in person in only a small window of time is really difficult so I appreciate what these editors are doing

i took beginner courses in university but that probably only got me to like an n4 level and then i studied on my own after that. I wish i could go to language school in japan but i can't afford it! 😭

Some people have been asking me about language acquisition (learning Japanese). Wondering if I should talk about that too in my blog? I am definitely not 'fluent' but I am good enough at it to hang out with people who speak zero English... also im mostly self taught

yes for other genres theres a lot too! a lot of people started off with selling their doujinshi at Comitia (like for example Dungeon Meshi creator Ryoko Kui ) and it's always fun for me to see who got big through that route.

For serialized BL manga authors starting out in doujinshi is super typerical, whether they started in fandom or at original events. BL genre is so closely tied with doujinshi culture that if u follow the history of biggest dojinshi events, the starting point is Moto Hagio fanclubs LOL

I also have so many books to read 😂 I think editor insight is so helpful. I've been reading a lot of editor interview articles online that's helped me out a lot... to find out theres a whole book of insight + roundtable discussions w/ mangaka is a treasure trove for me as a novice

It’s a book mostly centered on planning a manga- tackling writing, storyboards, character designs, rough sketches, etc. It contains discussions with famous mangaka and editors.
