High-altitude balloons like Project Loon are cheaper and easier to deploy for regional coverage, but they can’t match global, continuous connectivity. LEO constellations provide low-latency broadband everywhere, 24/7, and are less affected by weather or stratospheric winds.

Astronomers aren’t joking — thousands of LEO satellites reflect sunlight during twilight, streaking long-exposure images. Even with dark coatings, a 200k-satellite constellation would seriously disrupt wide-field and deep-sky observations.

You’d only see the ones in sunlight (mostly at dusk/dawn), and most would be too dim to notice. Sky wouldn’t turn into a grid, but twilight would definitely look busier.

But this is only a hypothetical experiment. I guess China does only reserve slots strategically it will not use them actually.

203,000 LEO satellites sounds like a lot — but Earth’s surface area is ~510 million km². Evenly distributed, that’s about 1 satellite per ~2,500 km². The sky above you out to the LEO horizon covers roughly that area, meaning statistically around one satellite overhead at a time, not thousands.

Yes good interpretation. This reads more like strategic spectrum reservation than a literal plan to launch 203,000 satellites.

Under ITU rules, early filings secure frequency and orbital priority, forcing competitors to coordinate around you. SpaceX and others have done similar large filings.
