Q for UK #skystorians - has anyone who is NOT AN ECR won a 'traditional' style grant recently, e.g. pays for your time & expenses to go to archives/do oral history, write up findings, run a workshop for colleagues, do small amount of community feedback/forward and/or public engagement, or similar?

Thanks @themedievaldrk.bsky.social and @mthrjo.bsky.social. I'm now looking at lovely pictures of gospel volumes.

This is 1526 in England. I'm not sure what liturgical literature (right term?) would be involved. Was just the New Testament in circulation? (3/3)

On evangelist, the OED says 'A copy of, or a volume containing, the Gospels, esp. when used as an object to swear on in taking an oath'. So, he was swearing on the New Testament that could have been in the whole Bible? (2/3)

In a bishop's register, I have a new incumbent swearing upon the 'Holy Gospels of God' (ad sancta Dei Evangelia) to pay the retiring priest a pension. A related Chancery case (the pension stopped being paid) refers 'an othe upon the holy Ev[a]ngelist'.
This is the New Testament? #medieval (1/3)

Yes. At least the unfair access to Latin learning for state schools compared to private schools was somewhat acknowledged.

I've imported Royal Commission data (from @jrdollery.bsky.social and @scottlloyd.bsky.social) into @mappingthemarch.bsky.social for @latemedievalist.bsky.social and @mattlampitt.bsky.social ) and I'm becoming slightly obsessed with the fragmentation of Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire!

Maybe Wigglesbottom Primary book series by Pamela Butchart, or the Claude series by Alex T. Smith? They are both funny with a good balance of text and illustrations. Also, Claude is a dog who wears a beret!

Conflict, War and Violence in the Early Modern World

University of Exeter, October 30, 2025 - October 31, 2025

Deadline for submission/application: September 5, 2025
Call for Papers

We are exploring early modern conflict in all its forms. We particularly seek to unpack the interactions between the more traditional aspects of conflict, such as the political, tactical and strategic, with the more human side of it, including sociocultural approaches that explore experiences, representations and impacts of violence. As such, we particularly welcome proposals that look beyond purely military history and break chronological, geographical and disciplinary boundaries.

We welcome proposals for individual papers of up to 20 minutes, or full panels of three to four papers, on any aspect of conflict, war and violence in the early modern period.

Speakers might consider, but are not limited to, the following themes:

โ€ข Physical, tactical, operational and strategic aspects of warfare.
โ€ข Martial identities, values and motivations.
โ€ข Notions of gender, race, class and religion.
โ€ข Remembering, (re)imagining and representing violence and/or conflict.
โ€ข The experience of violence, its impact and the everyday at war.
โ€ข Popular allegiance in early modern conflict.
โ€ข Maritime violence and naval warfare.
โ€ข The bureaucracy of conflict, finance and the law.

Abstracts of up to 300 words, along with a biographical note, should be sent to earlymodernwar@gmail.com by Friday 5th September.

Our database of people and their connections to places and manuscripts across the Welsh Marches is progressing! Starting to reconstruct individual networks from piles of rolls is very exciting as there's so much potential for how users of our database/website will use the data for their own research
