Arch Enemy has a new lead singer, Laurenย Hart Sounds like the departure of Alissa White-Gluz worked well for both parties. I already blogged how Alissa's new work feels more like her, fresh and different. And here we are, Arch Enemy with Lauren Hart, performing as if she's always been there. Their music sounds like a fantasy novel with dragons, hordes of orcs, and black magic.

Limping Park I managed to do 3K steps today. My knee is better, only hurts when walking. The pain at rest is gone. However, I think I won't be able to do the daily steps challenge for another week or so. Meanwhile, the winter decided that it's not over yet and surprised us with snow. The weather forecast says it will be summer within 3-4 days. Not sure who to trust on that. Sofia has this tendency to stay cold when the nearby mountains are covered with snow, and they will be for another month.

Why so serious I had a health scare today. Bumped my knee into a concrete trash can right outside a playground. I suspect making steps won't be possible for some time but at least nothing is broken, other than my plans. I moved the damn trash can out of the way. Whoever put it right at the exit of the playground was evil. Here's a cat photo from my only walk for the day. This is a mighty fluff, species unknown.

Trabant A Mercedes is trying to overtake a Trabant on the highway. The speed is high, way over the limit. The Mercedes is in the red, driving parallel to the Trabant. At the last moment, the Trabant slows down slightly. The Mercedes driver rolls down his window and shouts to the Trabant driver: "Now what?""Now third gear." - shouts the other driver back and disappears ahead. The photo features a cat. Can you find her?

Rep I set myself a goal to do one pull-up by the end of the year. I made some progress yesterday. My one rep is not a clean pull-up. The grip is neutral, and my legs are touching the ground from the moment I started pulling. I didn't jump, but it's not entirely clear from the video if I really pulled all of my body weight completely unassisted by my legs. In any case, I'm not too far off. So far, the number of injuries exceeds the number of pull-ups. Honestly, I didn't believe I'd get that far, let alone so soon.

AI Singularity I'm a software engineer. My job mostly boils down to three things: Understanding a requirement and turning it into tasks Implementing those tasks or monitoring the implementation by others Querying data about the project - events, stats, trends and such About a year ago, I switched entirely to AI-first engineering or vibe coding. Essentially, I let AI do most of the engineering work and mostly review the output it and provide feedback. By doing that, I felt a gradual increase of my output. At first, the gains were modest and it wasn't uncommon to lose more time with AI than I would've lost without it.

Children of Time by Adrianย Tchaikovsky The battle with this giant book was real. I started it months ago, then restarted it around New Year and completed over 10 books in between. The third attempt this month finally ended in victory. Two storylines alternate with slightly different characters each time. One follows a community of intelligent spiders. The other follows the last surviving humans, flying mostly frozen in a thousand-year-old spaceship called Gilgamesh. Itโ€™s no secret theyโ€™re heading for a crash. The deus ex machina pulls the strings toward a carefully arranged finale we can see from the orbit. I liked the spiders. I didnโ€™t like much else. From what I've heard, the second part is easier to read. 3/5.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wirelessย 4 Apart from buying books, I like getting myself little gadgets on occasion. Over 2025, that was mostly audio equipment. I got two closed-back headphones - the wireless SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 and the wired FiiO FT1. I also purchased an external microphone, which is waiting for the right moment be featured in a post. My last addition for 2025 was the lovely Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4. The original intent for getting earbuds was to use them as a backup. Maybe try using them for calls, replacing the FiiO FT1, because they offer better isolation.

Opus Claude Opus is my current most favorite model. I had a few blissful months of using it. Generated some good PRs, got stuck in debug loops not as many times as with previous models. I ended up extending the spend limit multiple times. Opus Cocktail Bar, Sofia After burning through far too many tokens, I had to stop and think. Is my usage really appropriate? Is it worth thinking how much tokens each prompt consumes? Is it because of the MCPs? Why does it make all these API calls to my dev server?

Cats First cat photo dump of the year! After all that winter hiding, the weather got warmer, and I had some cat spotting over the last few days. Boza In Bulgaria's olden days, Boza was a popular drink for kids. Ours was a fermented, slightly alcoholic beverage made from cereals. Itโ€™s a high-calorie drink, and I guess we were fed with it so weโ€™d grow up faster. It fell out of fashion, and by the early 2000s I'd stopped seeing it in fast-food places, almost fully replaced by Ayran and Coca-Cola. So imagine my surprise when I saw the nearby confectionery loading up on these giant bottles of Boza. They must be serving it by the glass. But it's usually very thick, almost cream-like.

Lake Ariana This is a rare pretty sight from the muddy winter Sofia. A boat in Lake Ariana. The city planners of the past were fascinated by lakes and rivers, which are naturally missing here. So they built fountains and lakes, and even attempted to build a river, a story for another post. The architects wanted the lake to function as an ice rink in the winter. However, this didn't work well even in the late 19th century, when the weather was colder. After some injuries and a few lengthy renovations, the lake is now emptied for the winter months to prevent any ice from naturally occurring.

Reading in January I spent more time reading this month than I normally do. Had a vacation during the first week of January and had some good luck with book finds. Many of the books I read were written by Alexandra Marinina - a Russian crime/thriller author. Her novels are taking place in Moscow from the early 1990s. These years were turbulent and Russia had some resemblance of freedom, with people acting like communism never happened. It had similarities with the early 90s from my own country, although quickly diverging as the series progresses.

By height, these rank as the cityโ€™s first, second, and third tallest buildings. The final photo is one of the tallest socialist buildings, which looks like a dwarf next to the Millennium Center, despite standing at 70 meters.

Complaining Daily writing prompt What do you complain about the most? View all responses My region is known for cultural complaining. Gather people from the Balkans around a table, and it's like a championship in complaining. I suspect this bad habit has Ottoman roots. You shouldn't stand out, to not gather unwanted attention. Misery as camouflage. For me - not sure. At one point, I read How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Carnegie is strongly against complaining. He thinks nobody enjoys listening to that and he's a smart person.

47 47 is a prime number, and the sum of its digits is also a prime. 47 is a good annual Goodreads goal because it's one less than a number divisible by 12. Let's call these Goodreads Primes: 11, 23, 47, 59, 71, 83, 107, 131, 167, 179, 191, 227, 239, 251, 263, 311... Gamebook Collection Some good folks created a tool where collectors can flag all the books they own so they know how far they are from a full set. I stopped buying old gamebooks some time ago because I wasn't able to keep track of them. So, this evening, I dug into the dusty shelves, and using that tool, I flagged all of my gamebooks. It took me almost two hours. I was surprised by many things, some pleasant, and some not. I only have 230 gamebooks out of 491. I thought I owned a lot more than that, given how much space they take.
