The incident at the downtown federal detention center is one of a succession of alleged abuses at Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (Ice) operated jails in the state since January, chronicled by advocacy groups Human Rights Watch, Americans for Immigrant Justice, and Sanctuary of the South from interviews with detainees.

The fact that the President of the United States posts a fake video of a kneeling Barack Obama being handcuffed and we’re supposed to pretend it’s perfectly normal, everyday stuff shows exactly what is terribly wrong with today’s political mainstream media.

This shows up all the time in discussions about police abolition and public space, because the mantra that « cops keep us safe » is supposed to be regarded as self-evident, even as evidence of harassment, racial profiling and deaths in custody suggest otherwise.

Safety for whom? As usual the word « safety » is meant to be the conversation stopper, the unanswerable value- but it doesn’t seem to apply to those populations terrorized by ICE, who fall outside the charmed circle of those whose safety matters to the regime.
