"People want the humanities. People want to care about literature. People want to be able to talk to each other about how art works in complex and skilled ways."

I said this in the interview and I mean it!

College Student Is Deported During Trip Home for Thanksgiving

She was first in her family to go to college.

She’d been in the U.S. since she was seven.

They grabbed at the airport on her way to surprise her family for thanksgiving.

They put her in shackles. Her ankles, her arms, and her waist.

ooof. I have been there and it’s a lot. can second much of what is discussed here: having a sibling helps enormously, caregiving can be staggeringly expensive, this work is hard and ongoing and most people do not have the resources to handle it and our healthcare system certainly doesn’t.

After three years of doing essentially nothing to address the rise of generative AI, colleges are now scrambling to do too much. Over the summer, Ohio State University, where I teach, announced a new initiative promising to β€œembed AI education into the core of every undergraduate curriculum, equipping students with the ability to not only use AI tools, but to understand, question and innovate with themβ€”no matter their major.” Similar initiatives are being rolled out at other universities, including the University of Florida and the University of Michigan. Administrators understandably want to β€œfuture proof” their graduates at a time when the workforce is rapidly transforming. But such policies represent a dangerously hasty and uninformed response to the technology. Based on the available evidence, the skills that future graduates will most need in the AI eraβ€”creative thinking, the capacity to learn new things, flexible modes of analysisβ€”are precisely those that are likely to be erode

Just read over some terrific student assignments for a class I’m teaching and the quality of their annotations of poems by Meleager, Shakespeare, Katherine Philips, D.A. Powell and Stephanie Burt gives me hope- lots of sharp young minds in my classroom, for sure. It’s not all gloom by any means!

This thread resonates for me as an educator; I am increasingly seeing students struggle with things that were regarded as quite basic ten years ago. I swear it’s not just old people grumbling about « kids today . . . « - something really feels profoundly off lately. Many factors colliding.

And still, there are those who say that Americans can’t do irony.

The Thanksgiving Myth Hides the US’s Inability to Reckon With Its Own History β€œI’m not against giving thanks. I’m against celebrating a falsehood,” says Choctaw historian A. S. Dillingham.

I spoke w/ Choctaw historian A.S. Dillingham about how the Thanksgiving myth helps the U.S. avoid reckoning w/ its own history.
β€œIt’s not about rejecting gratitude β€” it’s about refusing to celebrate a falsehood.”

I think some people are confusing "poverty line" with "at what level of wealth/income do you need to be at to not get totally screwed by a health event or a major accident?" and the answer in the US is "very, very high"

We don’t need to reform ICE.
We don’t need alternatives to ICE.
We don’t need to engage in dishonest debates wondering what the U.S. would do without ICE.

ICE isn’t even 23 years old. Most adults know a world without ICE. And the billions used to fund ICE can be used to meet people’s basic needs.
