Seminar/Course: Yale Global Health Seminar (YGHS) & EMD/HPM 580: Reforming Health Systems Innovative Financing for National Hepatitis C Elimination: Insights from Egypt's Experience Dr. Moustafa Abdalla is a Senior Health Economist at the World Bank, leading health system reform and pandemic preparedness efforts across Africa and the Middle East. With over 15 years of experience spanning policy, financing, and service delivery, he has shaped national and regional strategies that advance universal health coverage and strengthen resilience in low- and middle-income countries. A medical doctor by training, Dr. Abdalla has previously worked with the Islamic Development Bank, WHO, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Egypt's Ministry of Health. He regularly lectures at leading institutions including Harvard, Yale, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, focusing on innovation and financing for sustainable health systems. He holds a Master's in Health Care Management from Harvard University and a Master's in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The Symposium concluded with the YIGH Experiences in Global Health panel, where students Shankeri, Christina, Mohamed, and Jack reflected on their involvement with YIGH, discussing lessons learned with Abby Smith, YIGH Program Manager.

Faculty and students from the YIGH Community presented on their global health projects during the Lightning Talks session of the Second Annual Global Health Symposium, showcasing the range of topics tackled in their work.

“What sometimes feels like a breakdown is a breakthrough,” shared Dr. Laura Magaña, @aspph.bsky.social during the 2nd Global Health Symposium, reminding us:

“Through the faculty networks, I was able to bring together core faculty that I otherwise wouldn't have met,” said Melanie Sion, as part of the Faculty Networks Fireside Chat.

“We have to fight back” says Tim Leshan as he continues to talk about the impact of higher education and research, noting that there are opportunities for both sides to work together.

“Democracy promotes public health, and we all have to think about each other” says Tim Leshan, from @aspph.bsky.social, on why public health is critical for public health during his session on Global Health Policy Update and Outlook.

During the “New Frontiers Session” of the Symposium, Drs. Eleanor Reid, Nicky Hawley, Sunil Parikh, and Robert Hecht presented their projects awarded from seed funding opportunities at YIGH and from the Kempf and Macmillan Awards.

“One thing that will be important is to keep in mind that expertise comes in many forms.... As countries are thinking about their own strategies for accelerated health independence, its important doe us to show up as partners”, said Dr. Tracy Rabin on partnerships and collaboration.

“There’s a lot we can learn from putting ourselves in the shoes of those we are trying to serve,” said Dr. Luke Davis, @yalesph.bsky.social, in a follow up moderated discussion on @drtedros.who.int’s remarks, discussing the definition of and what it means to work in global health.
