Now is when you should be looking in your school district to find out if there is an election this year. If so, ask around--is there a pro-public education candidate running? If so, that person needs your help and support. If not, find someone to run--maybe it's yourself!

This is your regular reminder that you live in a school district. Look around. Is there a school board seat up this year (could be as early as May!)? Are there candidates running? The way many extremists get on school boards is through unopposed races. If you have a pro-public education candidate

candidate and support that person! Text your friends and neighbors reminding them to vote and saying why you support him or her. Throw a few bucks their way. Door knock. Put up a sign in your window or yard. It could make a huge difference. For more info, check out democracy-education.org.

This is my semi-regular reminder that if you're looking for something to do to push against authoritarianism, you might have to look no farther than your very own school district. Extremists want to take it over and cause havoc. Don't let them! See if there's a sensible pro-public education

What struck me about Reagan's talk was how he was trying to convince people of his point of view. What a refreshing thing for a president to do. We've heard so much bluster and "trust me, I'm smart" from this president.

Violating schools, churches, and hospitals is a way to say that there is no safe space. Teachers, clergy, doctors, and nurses can't help you. There is no one to trust, no place to go.

How to Research School Board Candidates & Note Catcher
Many districts are holding school board elections this November, particularly in Virginia and New Jersey. Don't be someone who gets to that on the ballot and say--ack, I forgot to find out who to vote for! Ask a trusted friend or neighbor. Or do your own research. drive.google.com/file/d/1aaKG...

Once extremists get on school boards, they wreak havoc, even if they're in the minority. Once they're in the majority they follow a pretty predictable pattern: they cancel contracts and start new ones with cronies; they hire expensive new lawyers; they harass teachers and administrators. Avoid that!

Having trouble figuring out who's an extremist and who's pro-public education? Extremists have moderated their language and it's sometimes hard to tell. But one clue is if they talk more about parents' rights to control education than children's right to get an education--they might be an extremist!

Following #NoKings, are you wondering what you can do? Look and see if there is a school board election in your district, and see if there is a pro-public education candidate running against an extremist and get involved. Put a sign in your window or yard; host a meet-and-greet; text your friends.
