It's just another way that institutions make you feel like you don't matter, that you walk out the door and no one notices or cares. That's not been true in my experience. I know I matter, to my students and to my colleagues, but the system is determined to convince me otherwise.

last week of teaching for the semester and for who knows how long for me. Been thinking of how much precarity robs you of a good ending. Last March I did big goodbyes to students then felt silly because I ended up back at the job in January. Not really sure how to talk about it all this time round.

Philippians 2 tells us how true unity happens: by all parties giving up selfish ambition and putting each others' interests before their own. By mutual submission.

If someone calls for you to unify with them but is not willing to do this, is it unity they want?

Student just told me I have the prettiest PowerPoint slides…guess I can retire now?

When did everyone stop using headphones? Why am I currently listening to two separate people scroll through tiktok on this train while another has an entire conversation, inexplicably, on speakerphone?

I spent from about July-October out of work and applying for both academic and non-academic jobs. I was getting absolutely nowhere. The job market is terrible right now for basically everything I'm qualified to do. It's so hard not to just feel total despair at it all.

This semester I'm precariously employed simultaneously at three unis. It is still not a full time role or a liveable wage. It's only possible because I can live with my very understanding parents. I love my job, I think teaching is a total privilege. But I am so, so tired of living like this.

I have enormous sympathy for people losing their homes in LA. Along with that, I can’t help but think of all the Gazan’s whose well-loved homes have been destroyed over the last year, and the difference in response from some sections of the world.
