Embla (Dutch Elm disease)

Dutch Elm Disease is caused by a fungus (carried by a beetle) that cuts off the tree's water supply.
This fungus is an invasive species, introduced by humans through global trade systems, slowly killing all elms in Europe today.

Watercolour painting.

One from a while ago. The Chesterfield Crag Martin. Not a bird I thought I would see in Derbyshire!

Ash dryad (watercolours)
This ash dryad is slowly dying from ash dieback, an invasive fungal disease which has spread widely over Europe in recent decades. Probably introduced via imported trees, it is again us humans disturbing the ecosystem to devastating effects.

Chestnut dryad (watercolours)
This dryad is old and wise, wearing autumn colours that will soon fade, but holding a chestnut - the hard work of a season promising a new future.

This dryad is inspired by mycorrhizal fungi that connect to tree roots to share nutrients and connect the forest into a complex network. Invisible to us, tiny mycelia are a vital part of the ecosystem and contributes to the resilience of a forest as a whole.

The aurora dryad is a dryad of the North. Her hair is inspired by beard lichen, a hanging kind of lichen that feeds wild animals and reindeer in times of snow, and adorned with glacier buttercups, a hardy flower in the mountains in Scandinavia.

Climate change forces many species out of their habitat. Even forests are migrating north and into higher altitudes, to find better living condition as their old home becomes too hot or too dry. Some tree species move an average of 1-1,5 km a year

The Dryad with the Cherry Earring (watercolours)

Dryads are tree spirits, mythological beings that take care of the forest. They come in as many forms as there are tree species on the earth. Here's a cherry dryad!
