We had big discussions over the pronunciation of Aedith. Tbh if I ever met her I would probably call her Captain Mercia anyway. She’s got a seax and she knows how to use it.

If you don't reading books with your eyes, read this with your ears instead, it's very good. Then James might hurry up and publish the second one.
Also, I just realised I was pronouncing Aedith wrong this whole time when reading it, instead calling her Edith.

Very true, and I suspect all four of the panelists will share that opinion!

Understood. I suppose in a way that’s sort of the point – lots of people write books, but very few actually get published! And there’s so much more to the process than just… writing a story, like you say.

As ever, tone doesn’t come across well on social media, but it was a light-hearted comment on the complexities of the submission and publication journey

Written a book? Congrats! Now the hard part: getting it published. But where do you start? Our Editorial Director, @emmajwaring.bsky.social, will be at Portsmouth Bookfest in March, attempting to demystify the process with a panel of fellow publishing professionals. wegottickets.com/event/683469

Text of a book:

I'll have to put something on the form to keep you on board.
Any word from your top brass?'
'I don't really have top brass.?
Agapos and Naeku stared at him.
'You what?' managed Agapos finally.
I can't honestly say I have a superior officer, not on this investigation, anyway. I work until the killer is caught, or I'm taken out of commission in the process.'
'Gods,' said Agapos, any resentment at being denied a kill now forgotten, "is that how it works? We need to try that.?
•A reminder that DI Drustan has to work without a Forensics team, tech support, legal counsel, backup or a coffee machine to call his own,' said Aedith. 'So, let's not get misty-eyed over how they do things across the border just yet.?
•Perhaps worth adding,' said Drustan, his face entirely straight,
'that when I hand in my report, I have to do it in bardic verse?
Aedith's turn to stare now. 'You've got to be kidding."
Drustan shook his head. 'I file a report, obviously, but it's a sign of respect to the elders to give a secondary report in the form of... well, as I said. We're still not a literate culture, in the majority, so this way everyone gets to hear what went on?

Looked at real world, (thanks @arrianna-planey.bsky.social) going back to my @jamesbluecat.bsky.social alt history police noir…

‘DI Drustan has to work without a Forensics team, tech support, legal counsel, backup or a coffee machine to call his own,' said Aedith. 'So, let's not get misty-eyed’

Alas, we don’t have the US rights so in fact James needs a US publisher 😁

We send our apologies to your wife, but also… sorry not sorry for publishing such a corker. Thanks for sharing, it makes a huge difference.

@jamesbluecat.bsky.social’s PAGANS is just perfectly balancing mismatched buddy cop, noir, and alternative history

I was late making dinner for the wife on Valentine’s Day because I got lost in it. (she forgave me, we’ve been together a bit)
