Always nice to get first migrants of the year. This LRP at the WMI site near Calf Heath late afternoon #staffsbirds

They can live for 5-10 years, good survival rate, so can linger in good spots for some years, masking very low breeding success and loss of birds between the good spots, which previously supplied many of the replacements. Then it catches up with them as they age & die, with fairly rapid collapse.

I agree with both and guess leaves populations isolated which i guess causes in breeding too. Final pair on patch used to get evicted by blue tit so was never succesful in the end

It may have taken 4 attempts across 2 counties since 2023, but this morning I finally caught up with the superb Black-winged Kite at Ludham Bridge in Norfolk. Initially watched at range consuming prey, this ghostly raptor then flew & alighted in trees barely 80m from where we stood. Absolutely ace.

Great!!
willow tit gone by me as have tree sparrows. Bullfinch going same way. March and still not seen any bullfinch around my patch this year. Very hard to find. Only good news is grey partridge seem to be doing a bit better in last two years. Birds i took for granted as a teenager.

Maybe the females aren't as obvious to casual folk🀷
Something weird is going on with Grackles these last few years certainly. I mean one has even reached the Azores, presumably by boat.
Or our friend from Holbury just went for a jaunt round Southampton and decided he didn't like itπŸ˜‰

'Why we are removing bird feeding stations from Yorkshire nature reserves' Yorkshire Wildlife Trust explains why it is removing bird feeding stations from its Yorkshire nature reserves

Great to see signs that evidence for widespread unintended direct and indirect negative impacts of bird feeding e.g. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... is now informing conservation policy
