Always nice to get first migrants of the year. This LRP at the WMI site near Calf Heath late afternoon #staffsbirds
They can live for 5-10 years, good survival rate, so can linger in good spots for some years, masking very low breeding success and loss of birds between the good spots, which previously supplied many of the replacements. Then it catches up with them as they age & die, with fairly rapid collapse.
Oh great really sad news
Very sad times
I agree with both and guess leaves populations isolated which i guess causes in breeding too. Final pair on patch used to get evicted by blue tit so was never succesful in the end
Massive good luck
It may have taken 4 attempts across 2 counties since 2023, but this morning I finally caught up with the superb Black-winged Kite at Ludham Bridge in Norfolk. Initially watched at range consuming prey, this ghostly raptor then flew & alighted in trees barely 80m from where we stood. Absolutely ace.
Great!!
willow tit gone by me as have tree sparrows. Bullfinch going same way. March and still not seen any bullfinch around my patch this year. Very hard to find. Only good news is grey partridge seem to be doing a bit better in last two years. Birds i took for granted as a teenager.
sad that only reliable willow tits is north staffordshire when i was a teenager my local patch in wton had 6 pairs and they were easier to see than coal tit locally. keep thinking noway am i going an hours drive to see them but how much longer will they be in staffs
Pleased to find 3 willow tit at Deep Hayes CP this morning as I failed to find any last year. Also green woodpecker, red kite, 4 mandarin, tawny owl and 2 redpoll (lesser) #staffsbirds
Redshank at RSPB Sandwell Valley W Mids yesterday. Very scarce for the Valley.
Maybe the females aren't as obvious to casual folkπ€·
Something weird is going on with Grackles these last few years certainly. I mean one has even reached the Azores, presumably by boat.
Or our friend from Holbury just went for a jaunt round Southampton and decided he didn't like itπ
Slow start to March in 10k but still 2 additions (87 now). Woodcock flying in front of car at Wergs Hall Road in daylight on 4/3, over main A41 and off over houses! Tried to get in on the Scoter action yday at Himley Pool but no joy just Goosander, 4 Gt C Grebe & 1st Chiffchaff of year #ukbirding
A group of males? No females
Great to see signs that evidence for widespread unintended direct and indirect negative impacts of bird feeding e.g. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... is now informing conservation policy

Spring has begun... over the last week we have received 35 reports of Sand Martins, seven of Swallow, four each of Wheatear and House Martin, and two Red-rumped Swallows! #ukbirding
Two new Gulls for me today with the superb 1w Ross's Gull giving great views at Newlyn & then finally managing to connect with Ring-Billed Gull at Lelant Saltings after at least a dozen failed attempts! A memorable mornings Birding in Cornwall #UKBirding #RareBirdsUK #CornwallBirds
