I may be wrong and the market may have changed as the form becomes more apparent in the industry - I would love to think so!

I would say, looking at the evidence in the industry, that it's rare. Also, this was v much the message I received when I was writing my debut, which I had originally conceived of as a novella.

As a child, when I first heard about the Speaking Clock I assumed it was a person with a really good internal chronometer who was just shut in a room with a telephone and had to estimate the time whenever someone rang

The problem is that advances with Big 5 are so variable. Without a fixed figure to compare digital first to, the question can't be answered definitively. What is predictable, is the percentage cut the writer gets with digital first publishers, tho of course sales themselves can't be predicted.

How to be a writer:
First, plant the tree on which the leaves of your book will be printed.
Next, hatch the bird from whose quill your ink will flow.
Water the tree.
Feed the bird.
Learn the patience of things that grow and the joy of things that sing.
Make tea: you've got time.

Official DWP Freedom of Information response letter dated May 15, 2025, to Jay Watts regarding PIP claimants with mental health conditions. The document reveals that as of January 2025, there were 357,570 people receiving standard rate PIP daily living component and 878,800 receiving enhanced rate, all with primary mental health conditions.

Key findings include detailed tables showing the percentage of claimants scoring below 4 points in each of 10 daily living activities. For standard rate claimants, 95-100% scored below 4 points in most activities, with 81% (291,390 people) failing to meet a proposed 4-point minimum threshold across all activities. For enhanced rate claimants, percentages varied more widely (21-99% depending on activity), with only 9% (75,230 people) failing the proposed threshold.
The response includes a breakdown by specific mental health subcategories for enhanced rate claimants, showing mixed anxiety and depressive disorders had the highest numbers (36,760 people) not meeting the threshold. The document includes standard government disclaimers about data rounding, methodology, and appeal rights under the Freedom of Information Act.

๐ŸงตTW: PIP & Mental Health My new FOI further exposes the 4+ ruleโ€™s cruel impact on mental health. 1 in 3 MH claimants will be cut off, including those with the most severe disability. It shows a system built to erase cumulative + fluctuating need. #TakingThePip #WelfareNotWarfare

Every published friend I have has written their novel alongside full time work, complicated family stuff or any number of challenging circumstances and that, I hope, is an encouraging thought for anyone else trying to write a novel! Because of my health/ energy/ work/ family, it took me 3 years!
