Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeareβs Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Yet again, in almost any other NZ government a minister telling NZers to *eat less food* to save money would have them hounded by media and pushed out of politics.
Never forget the immensely important protective role that NZ media have played in protecting these fascists from public outrage.

61 shops announce closures in 10 days: Will liquidation numbers get worse before they improve?
There are warnings the number of businesses closing could get worse before it gets better.
Shops donβt close themselves.
Itβs not 61 shops, itβs people closing livelihoods, itβs staff losing their jobs, itβs creditors not being paid, itβs parents with no income facing the expense of the start of the school year and a heartless systemically unhelpful WINZ.

The women were marvellous
In 1951, after watersiders had refused overtime work in protest at a low wage offer, the government announced a state of emergency.
NCWNZ rightly calls out this govt's War on Women & in 1951 Labour MP Mabel Howard called the National govt's response to the waterfront stoppage a War on Women, too. It's endless, and so is resistance - women organised, fought back. #WarOnWomen heritageetal.blogspot.com/2018/10/the-...

#NZ - The National Council of Women is calling out the Coalition Government for its #WarOnWomen.
βThis Government is systematically dismantling the democratic safeguards that protect fairness, equity, and public voice in Aotearoa.

Remember during Covid when all those βunskilledβ jobs were actually the ones deemed essential. While many with βimportantβ jobs sat around baking bread.
Many of those essential roles are the ones being impacted by pay equity shafting.
Praised then, scoffed at now. Shame on this Government.

Kate Sheppard would be rolling in her grave after this weekβs events, writes Verity Johnson
OPINION: I canβt work out which part of this weekβs pay equality law change was the most horrifying.
This from Verity Johnson hits what I think is the most important point in this whole thing (I said it in a much more sweary way last night) - women had followed process and were seeking redress through the 'proper' channels. All that was ignored and destroyed.

The billionaire, the sculptorβs widow and the fake artwork
The widow of acclaimed sculptor Paul Dibble has tracked a counterfeit to the home of billionaire toy tycoon Nick Mowbray, and wants to have it destroyed.
Only two The Gold of the KΕwhai study 1 were ever made and are owned by private collectors in Christchurch and New Plymouth.
So, Fran Dibble was distraught to discover one on display in the garden of billionaire toy tycoon Nick Mowbrayβs sprawling Mahoenui Valley property.
