๐๏ธ Research from Scripps Oceanography scientist Lia Siegelman finds undersea "storms" are melting Antarctic glaciers from below. Researchers also identified a positive feedback loop in which ice shelf melting caused more ocean turbulence, which in turn caused more ice shelf melting.
DOGE is reportedly threatening NOAA with massive staff and budget cuts.
NOAA houses the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center, which produce forecasts and warn people about storms.
This attack on public safety is ripped straight from the pages of Project 2025.
This place could use a chunky dose of delicious satellite imagery.
So here are some of my favorites I've shared over the years.

Are there any soft matter physics researchers here? I am an Editor at Nature Communications and handle soft matter physics manuscripts. I will share published articles here to enhance their visibility. I look forward to more engaging scientific discussions. #SoftMatterPhysics #Academia #Physics

I am speaking/leading a discussion about teaching Machine Learning in the Physical Sciences tomorrow, Nov 12 at 7pm EST! Will share the resources I have put together (textbook, notebooks, slides, assignments, online courses) and my challenges. Join us + spread the word ๐ www.compadre.org/PICUP/
#30DayMapChallenge Day 11: Arctic
One year of MODIS daily mosaic images
Did you know optical satellites like MODIS usually don't capture images over the poles in winter due to lack of sunlight? The "no data" hole grows as we near the winter solstice - and starts closing once daylight returns
Starting my Bluesky life by resharing this six-day time lapse movie of Dictyostelium discoideum we took a few years ago.
Shallow M6.8 #earthquake offshore Cuba just now, strike slip faulting, yellow alert for estimated economic losses and fatalities. ๐งชโ๏ธ

And finally, last new pack of the day, a (so far) very (!) incomplete set for physical oceanography ๐๐งช
Please do let me know if you want to be on it, or if you know someone else who should be!

From the other place.
Red Sea reefs are considered, relatively, heat resistant. Their adaptations are, at times, discussed as key to saving other reef systems - so understanding heat dynamics in this region is critical. ๐งช
#oceanographers:
Do you think the subpolar North Atlantic gyre strength is correlated to AMOC strength? If so, what is the sign of the relationship? I have an opinion, but Iโve found articles taking different positions on the topic.
Nice to meet you Kevin!
The Oceanography ๐ feed is back after its Brazilian vacation. Please give it a โlikeโ to increase visibility, even if you dislike the ocean.
Let me know if youโre a marine scientist who wants to be included as a contributor.
Thank you very much Malin! All of this will be very useful!
Oh that sounds great, thank you!
Any book/lecture recommendation on ocean numerical models? ๐๐
