There are many good reasons to do so even now. Modern games are expensive, and bad, and the focus groups may be set up by AI. You could play old games offline. Old games that weren't released in the US arent only easily translated into English, but many other languages.
Man i first discovered emulation at 14, and my eyes were opened. This was back in 1999 when ZSNES didn't have transparency support and the sound was horrendous, but dammit I did it and I loved it!
I learned the same year that rom hacking and fan translations were a thing.

You know this may actually have a bit to do with idiots saying bands like Green Day and Rage Against the Machine have gone woke. They look at them through nostalgia goggles while forgetting their whole point.
Its connection to conservatism is unsettling though, I tend to get emotional listening to music I remember, but it frightens me to think that this is the same emotion that leads to the prejudice I see so darn often these days. I just hope I can avoid that.
The thing with games especially is just the fact that many mechanics, story elements and other aspects were things we would simply never put up with now. Final fantasy XI for example in its earliest form was an extremely difficult slog where you would get in a group for hours to gain a level.
I’ve found that nostalgia can be fine with certain things, but not with other. Music, particularly instrumental music is probably safe because there are no words to have fallen out of vogue, but movie, songs with lyrics and especially video games are too dictated by past sensibilities
That sounds absolutely precious, like a friend that is easy to take care of. I would learn to sew and make you clothes, or ask my mother if she could cause she actually knows how to sew and made her own clothes for a lot of her childhood

I feel utterly blessed that the one Greek place in town is family owned and as authentic as it can be, right down to having an actual leg of lamb that they cut the meat off.
The only other place in town to get a gyro is Arby’s and theirs is a sin against Hellenic culture itself.
People that make music for games are a special breed. Even if the game is mediocre they know it doesn’t mean they have to phone it in. There are so many examples and god bless them.
My favorites are the calamity boss themes. Absolutely amazing music for a mod for terraria.

Going though your list, all of those serve certain purposes, and a good portfolio contains all of them. Convincing a publisher or art director that you are capable of making all sorts of things is good, and it may even pay to have several portfolios showing different specialties
It’s hard to decide on just one thing sometimes. Kidlit stuff is always needed. Children’s books giving them a love of reading. I can think of nothing we need more than inspiring tales for children.
Beyond that fanart for fame and notice, and snails cause they are cute ;)
They have no passion or creativity, so the idea of actually creating interesting characters is foreign to them, as foreign as climbing a tree to a fish.
