You definitely got a little piece of my soul with those two. So much fun to do.

The day after we put the final touches on issues #88-91 of “Swamp Thing”, news broke about the passing of Tatjana Wood, the original colorist on the series. Tomorrow, March 2nd, would have been Tatjana’s 100th birthday. Let’s raise a glass to one of comics’ originals.

The only oil I used on Hoggle was for his cap. I started with pencil, but the red looked bland and kind of dissolved into the rest of the piece. The vibrance of the oil helped push everything else off the paper. Small creative decisions make huge differences in the final work.

The seafoam moon just felt like the way to go here. It's got a vintage feel to it that I like.
I laid his base down in oil and tidied him up with indigo pencil.
The paper is toned with a heavy wash of Payne’s gray and indigo blue watercolor. Once that dries, I can draw and paint on top of it.

This is so many light layers of pencil layered the same way oil glazes are used.
I’m not sure why I decided on the bronze/patina instead of stone, but I’m still happy with her.
