Granny Nanny was settling down to a spliff and a cup of coffee to reward herself for an early morning’s labor. Nanny loved her chickens, they loved her back. It was practically their religion to give her eggs and then their meat, to be ground and tilled back into the soil to keep it rich and fertile. They welcomed their place in the cycle of Death and Rebirth, because their life was comfortable and filled with love. Nanny had all kinds and even bred them to sell to other farmers. She wished Schadenfreude was around, he would have gotten a kick out of her Jersey Giants. She missed her friend and he had been in her thoughts, lately. She knew he didn’t have many friends of his own, not that he wasn’t to blame. She didn’t have many either and that’s why they got along. His dark sense of humor and love of animals did help bring them together. She sighed as she untied the red bandana that held her luscious mane of silvery dreads and used it to wipe the sweat off her brow. She let the sun warm her dark skin, easing her aching muscles. She was old and had seen enough conflict to be as comfortable with it as she was on her little farm. A simple cord of leather with an old lead bullet hangs around her neck, drawing one’s eye to a star-shaped scar on her right breast. She was Nanny of the Maroons, Bane to Empires, Lion Queen of Jamaica, Strider on the Tides, the Bulletproof Bitch, the Swordbearer, The Red Horseman. She looked up and saw another of her friends coming from around the house.
