The basilica’s soaring façade becomes a stage for this graceful popolana—a working-class Venetian woman indicated by her simple topknot hairstyle and modest dress. Morrice paints her with understated elegance, conjured in swift, expressive strokes of colour.

In 𝘍𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘵. 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘬'𝘴 𝘊𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘩 (c.1894), James Wilson Morrice captures a young woman crossing the Piazza San Marco, likely as he sketched from his seat at the famed Caffè Florian—a gathering place for artists then, and still beloved today.

The truck, angled as it turns, creates a dynamic sense of movement as it prepares to descend the hill, accentuated by the bold red of the Stedmans storefront. Every detail—from the gleaming milk bottle to the dog’s unwavering stare—reveals Colville's hallmark precision.

In this meticulously composed scene, a Mercury truck winds down Main Street, crates of milk nestled in the trunk bed. A young boy balances on the running board, bottle in hand, while a black dog, perched proudly at the tailgate, meets our gaze with steady resolve.

In Canadian photographer Rita Leistner's Enchanted Forest series, captured at night with powerful strobe lights, Leistner invites us to look up into a glowing canopy of towering spruce and beyond, to the night sky. The result is a rare, otherworldly view of the forest after dark.
