Romance is viewed as the sort of cash cow formulaic fantasy that many authors exploit for easy money. An indie bookstore might want to distinguish themselves as a more literary enterprise. Just letting you know, it's viewed more as smut than literature in the industry.
so every once in a while everyone gets on here and is like SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL INDIE BOOKSTORES YOU MONSTERS and then also when a romance author (not me) points out their disappointment that the bookstore doesn't carry romance, this is the response.
anyway, LOVE to all the indies carrying romance!

Can confirm! Itchio is a great place for indie authors, especially marginalized authors who have been censored on KDP and/or who fear a KDP crackdown on queer content.
