A Liberal councillor who made LGBT+ history Sam Green was the first openly gay politician ever elected in the UK – and possibly the world.

I was honoured to unveil a plaque for Sam Green, the first openly gay politician to be elected in the UK.

He did so much for his community and his courage and dedication remind us to keep championing equality, respect and the rights of everybody.

Elected in 1972 as the first openly gay politician in the UK, Sam Green served his community with commitment and courage, and we’re proud that Ed Davey was there to unveil a plaque in his honour.

Now one of their leaders has been jailed for it.
