Image for the documentary Ghost in the Machine by Valerie Veatch. The title appears in large glitch-style rainbow text over a black-and-white close-up of a hand holding a set of mechanical eyes. At the top it reads “Official Selection 2026 Sundance Film Festival” and “A Film by Valerie Veatch.” A quote reads, “A necessary, radical, Molotov cocktail of a documentary.” Attribution: The Wrap. A small badge on the right says “Not AI.”

The wait is (almost) over! @ghostdoc2026.bsky.social is coming to audiences on March 27th! Screenings and rentals are available via Kinema, and the film will stream free on PBS and YouTube this fall. Details at: notaidoc.com

OFLAIN I the anti-tracking Faraday bag blocks WLAN, GPS, WIFI, RFID Digital detox to go: Put your cell phone in the bag and all signals such as mobile networks, WiFi, GPS, RFID and Bluetooth are blocked. Online compartment included! Now you decide when to be available...

Plus, things like this very chic Faraday phone bag *are* effective.

(You don't need to spend $100 on one though. You can make one with tin foil and an envelope.)

Now, plenty of improvements in surveillance tech (e.g. gait detection) would render most anti-surveillance fashion ineffective in many scenarios (would LOVE to see robust testing on this). But I think even making a fashion statement of "evading surveillance is cool" is meaningful.

A person against a white backdrop wearing bright yellow sneakers, black pants, and a very colorful sweater. The sweater looks somewhat like blurred, abstract figures of people, in blobs of pink, blue, white, green, red, and black. There are two bounding boxes superimposed over the sweater, both significantly offset from the figure, which read "PERSON CONFIDENCE: 70%" and "PERSON CONFIDENCE: 50%". A picture of a person's torso wearing a shirt. The shirt looks like a poorly AI-generated image of an endless crowd of white people in what appear to be hippie costumes, as if in an endless uncanny valley music festival. Colorful swirls emerge around the top of the crowd. The shirt looks very strange and unsettling.

And there are still people in the "trick object detection with this shirt" game! The vibe still ranges from "eccentric but wearable" to "rather upsetting to perceive"

I think this facial-recognition-spoofing reflective makeup from The Unseen is really cool:

Facial recognition has come a long way in the 16(!) years since CV dazzle— it's cool to see makeup advancing too (although I still wouldn't bank on it).

If you still want to spend several $$$ on tacky sunglasses, consider instead: www.reflectacles.com

(This whole fiasco did inspire me to go see what people in anti-surveillance fashion have been up to lately and it is kinda fun ⬇️)

Was the Anthropic hullabaloo ultimately an example of an AI company finally standing up to the Trump regime and doing the “right thing” when it comes to concerns about the lethal entanglement between the military & “AI”? Sadly, no.

Poorly drawn sketch of a large computing machine connected to electrical wires and three stick figures kneeling in front of it. Text above the stick figures says: "O Deep Thought what is the ultimate answer to the problem of the climate crisis?" Same sketch, now with text above the machine saying: "You should have stopped burning fossil fuels" Same sketch, zoomed out to see three smoke stacks and text above the stick figures saying: "How could we have known?"

I'm no artist, but hopefully this gets the point across. A comic in three panels.

Picture of a panel in a conference center. There is a dias with a black curtain at the front, and a gray podium. Behind the dias sits Carmen Maria Machado, a fair-skinned femme wearing glasses with dark hair, Umair Kazi, a brown masc with dark hair, Alex Hanna, a brown butch trans woman with short brown hair, and Vauhini Vara, a brown woman with long black hair wearing a red blouse.

There were 250 people in the audience, at the biggest available room for our #awp26 panel, Resisting AI in Writing and Teaching.

It was invigorating; hearing about how writing instructors are pushing back against their institutions was inspiring. Thanks to my co-panelists Carmen and Umair.

Ad for a session. There is a black and teal gradient in the back. It reads

Then three images:
A femme with dark hair wearing a black blazer and a dark blouse, looking towards the camera, with an arm up on a table. Below it reads, Carmen Maria Machado.

A black and white picture of a man with dark skin, slightly long black hair, and dark stubble. Below it reads, Umair Kazi.

A brown trans woman with slightly longer black curly hair, wearing a black sweater, with her arms crossed. She is standing in front of a brick wall. Below it reads, Dr. Alex Hanna.

A fourth picture is on the right: a woman with brown skin, shoulder-length black hair, is smiling and looking at the camera. She is wearing a chunky necklace and a black t-shirt. Below it reads, Moderated by Vauhini Vara.

An image with a blue gradient in the center and California poppy in faded yellow. It features the Berkeley Sociology logo, and the following text:

From: 'David James Harding' via socgrads@lists.berkeley.edu <socgrads@lists.berkeley.edu>
Date: Mon, Mar 2, 2026 at 8:01 AM
Subject: 2026 Sociology Commencement Speaker: Dr. Alex Hanna

Dear Sociology Community,

I'm very pleased to announce that our speaker for the 2026 Sociology Commencement will be Dr. Alex Hanna, a writer and a sociologist of technology, labor, inequality, and social movements whose academic and public-facing work can be found in our discipline's top journals, blogs, op-eds, policy briefs, and in your neighborhood book store.

17 years ago, I didn't get into the UC Berkeley Sociology program.

In May, I'll have the distinct honor of giving the keynote speech at this year's commencement. I'm still processing this, but I'm ecstatic for the opportunity to pay forward a little voice of hope and solidarity.
