Charlottesville City Council unanimously agreed at its meeting Monday to settle a lawsuit challenging a December 2023 zoning ordinance meant to provide more residential density to the city.

UVA Student Council President Clay Dickerson had a lot to say at yesterday's protest. His reaction after the compact was rejected is just...delightful.

'We reject the compact': UVA community speaks out at National Day of Action The school in Charlottesville is the first public university to say no.

Today, UVA became the first public university and the fifth school overall to reject the compact, which requires schools that sign to adhere to a set of standards laid out by the White House in order to receive preferential federal funding.

Charlottesville City Council approves $6.2M building purchase for shelter The city plans to turn 2000 Holiday Drive into a 200-bed low-barrier shelter.

At Monday’s meeting, the Charlottesville City Council unanimously approved the purchase of 2000 Holiday Drive, a 27,000-square-foot office building that the city plans to turn into a low-barrier shelter as part of its homelessness intervention plan.

Albemarle clerk fears courthouse ICE raid had chilling effect on legal system He told VPM News court staff and victims are scared of being detained.

At the end of September, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were seen outside the Albemarle County Courthouse in Charlottesville, but did not come into the building.

Virginia lawmakers react to federal government shutdown Gov. Glenn Youngkin says Democrats are looking to "hold America hostage."

State Sen. Creigh Deeds (D–Charlottesville) told VPM News that in the short term, "a whole lot of people are going to be inconvenienced because they're not going to get the checks they need to support their families and pay their bills."

Updated: UVA board votes to transfer Oak Lawn to Charlottesville schools The city wants to use the property to expand its program offerings.

Last Friday, the University of Virginia Board of Visitors voted to lease the historic Oak Lawn home to Charlottesville City Schools for $1 annually, with the option to hand over ownership later.

Charlottesville City Council discusses changing police oversight board rules The PCOB currently lacks enough members to take a vote or hold hearings.

In its first joint meeting, the Charlottesville City Council and the city’s Police Civilian Oversight Board met Sept. 11 to discuss ordinance changes on office operations and functionality, as well as ordinance clarity.

At the upcoming University of Virginia Board of Visitors Finance Committee meeting on Sept. 12, the university is expected to lease and transfer the historic Oak Lawn home to Charlottesville City Schools for a “nominal fee.”

Charlottesville City Council OKs Avon Street transportation redesign Residents also voiced concern about student apartments set for West Main Street.

In Monday’s city council meeting, councilors heard resident and advocate concerns about an 11-story student housing project next to Westhaven. They also passed a resolution redesigning Avon Street for multimodal transportation, removing 33 on-street parking spots.

Youngkin signs order calling for hiring of more nursing home inspectors More than 40% of the state's inspector positions are currently vacant.

Virginia Department of Health's Office of Licensure and Certification investigates complaints in nursing homes. So far in 2025, there have been 1,079 complaints, up from 730 in all of 2024. Still over 40% of OLC's inspector positions are vacant, according to Youngkin.

Congress will claw back $1.1B from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. VPM, which is a PBS and NPR affiliate, will lose more than $2.5M over the next two years in lost funds. VPM President Jayme Swain says the cuts could result in the loss of Central Virginia local programming.

For the first time in more than a decade, the University of Virginia Faculty Senate overwhelmingly passed a vote of no confidence in the school’s Board of Visitors, indicating that a majority of the group does not support the governing body’s policies
