⭐ After quite some time in the making, I’m excited to share our new paper!🌿⭐
We examined people's climate-relevant behaviors (driving, air travel, public transport use, and meat consumption) and their perceptions of how feasible it would be to change them (+ expected wellbeing impacts).

Further robust evidence suggesting green nudges at the individual level are unlikely to make a difference. As we recently suggested, it is time to abandon the prevailing success focus and rather think of this body of evidence as pointing to the many structural constraints people are facing, and

We always get asked, "What can I *personally* do to help address climate change?"
Sadly, there hasn't been a very good answer to this question. Previous guides often treated people as monoliths, giving them a one-size-fits-all answer.
But that's changed now. Enter SHIFT.

Accordingly, we advocate for a broader role for behavioral science in public policy - a role that also includes diagnosing structural constraints, co-designing structural solutions, and helping overcome barriers to structural policy support.
We propose a more holistic view-one that recognizes the diagnostic potential and policy relevance of unsuccessful behavioral interventions. When behavior change fails despite good design, it often points to deeper structural constraints. These failures may justify stronger, systemic policy measures.
Igniting a fire in a wet environment is hard, isn't it? 🔥🌧️
Likewise, even the best-designed interventions struggle in everyday settings where choice environments are structurally misaligned with policy goals, such as in areas like reducing obesity or carbon emissions.
📢 New commentary out today in Nature Human Behaviour!
We argue that behavior change interventions often suffer from a one-sided success focus. But failures may reveal structural barriers people face.

We hope these findings inform efforts to close the perception–policy gap in climate governance.
#ClimatePolicy #BehavioralScience #PluralisticIgnorance
Why this matters:
Political decision-making is often shaped by perceived public opinion.
When policymakers underestimate public support for climate action - that is, they misread the “signal” - ambitious climate policies are less likely to be proposed or championed.
Key Findings:
Citizens underestimate how much others support climate action, replicating earlier work on pluralistic ignorance✅
👉 but: Politicians show even greater underestimation (particularly regarding people's support for taxes, laws, and also their willingness to contribute 1% of income).
